There's this narrative that Asians can't be actors because it's a high risk field. Well in general, I think it is because from what I've heard, only a few are selected to be the chosen ones ascending to A-list level. But what I find extremely unhelpful is that everyone around me is against the idea. Unfortunately, I grew up with the typical Asian parents who dictate what your future should look like. That is, doctor, lawyer, accountant, engineer and other traditional fields. Literally everyone, including extended relatives, their sons and daughters are going to these exact same fields. Not only that but also on the internet, I get mean snarky comments that are super unhelpful and very ambition-destroying, creating feelings of hopelessness. They turn personal and start insulting me and calling me delusional and grandiose. Simu Liu dreamt of being an actor and similar to me, he had to fight off asian parents and the status quo to make that happen. Then eventually, an opportunity came up and it made him famous compared to before. Now I understand not every actor will get this, but I also understand that if you don't try, it's guaranteed to never happen. I find it very difficult to find support, especially when it comes to finding out what I want for my destiny. Family is against me, internet strangers are against me and both of them are fueling my internal self-doubts which also work against me. In addition, there are less characters available to play in Hollywood because there aren't that many people writing up stories of asian-based characters in the first place. I'm just feeling a little regret because I'm 24 now and it's still going to take 2 more years before I finally finish my degree. On the other hand, there's already a lot of Gen Z actors that've been playing the game since 10 years ago. They had supportive parents that are willing to risk it and sadly, that's not really the case in most Asian households. I'm feeling like all I have is myself if I want to do whatever I want to do in life.
Hello, I am a 14 year old male who always wanted to start acting, I was wondering if anybody could give me advice.. I am pretty anxious and insecure since I was bullied back then so I never really wanted my face to be seen so I never asked my parents to let me join an acting class, but honestly I'm starting to care less about how I look on camera and I've got alot of hobbies but I always wanted to become an actor, idk if this is important but i speak like 6 languages and have the highest level u can get in the education system here in Curaçao. I always wanted to get out of this place, be well known and get young fans to relate to me or help people out, I always wanted to live in a country with skyscrapers or have my name be known. Any tips?? And is acting way too difficult for a 14 year old to handle and still be sane?
hi, i’m a female teen actor! i’m signed with a local sag agency and i’ve done a commercial & student film before, but i’m still struggling to find my footing & would love some advice. i know the whole deal with self-tapes, but im not sure how to make an effective demo reel (or really what the difference is?). i was signed with basically no experience (dont worry, not a scam - just an impressive audition tape!) and my agent has pointed me in the direction of some places that will create a demo reel for you at a steep price, but obviously i’d rather not pay. is a demo reel just a self tape with a monologue? or is it an actual scene out of a film? how do i create one that stands out…. and how do i choose the right monologue, just something off of stage milk? should i use clips from the commercial & student film (where i don’t speak)? i’m really excited to get into acting, but it’s pretty hard to get even an audition or call back if i don’t know how to make an effective demo reel, lol. i’ve watched some videos on youtube and looked through faq, but all it’s really done is confuse me more. looking for some guidance! thanks :)
I am a local sag actor based in Boston. It feels like audition opportunities through Boston Casting are few and far between. Are they just super selective with who they call in / stick to a tight pool of favorites? In a smaller market like Boston, it can be discouraging when local actors don’t get the opportunity to audition for the major projects coming through. is it just me or is it really hard to get signed as a non union actor? I am self submitting auditioning , have headshots, reel etc… doing a workshop next month with a well known manager and of course I hope I do well. But it’s hard out here for sure. And I do believe exposure doing workshops and showcases do help when it’s the right one.
Does she know Stella Adler (a woman) was one of the best teachers for method acting? Method is now seen as a joke thanks to people who are NOT method acting but just being pricks (like Leto). These (very few) actors like Daniel Day Lewis or Heath Ledger were using ideas based on method acting but they were also making their own stuff, staying on character after the cut was never a thing in any of the schools for method. Now the whole idea is demonized or wrongly attached to these male actors which is ridiculous and ignorant imo.

I want to be clear that this sub has been very helpful for a bunch of different reasons and I think overall it is a net positive to have a community like this. But lately, I've been seeing a lot of posts with a tone similar to that of "the industry has changed so much that no more regular working actors can live anymore and only the top one percent are ever going to succeed, and it's never been this bad, and this is just going to be how it is from now on." While I never want to disregard someone's lived experiences/feelings, I've realized that for me, reading those posts and comments makes me feel so down about myself and where I'm looking to go in my acting career, rather than pushing me to be the best actor I can be. I'm not delusional; the industry is very slow right now, but I also know that there is still opportunity out there and that I just need to give it time. Just wanted to offer this perspective in case anyone needed to hear it. Yeah, it may suck a bit right now, but keep looking for the light that keeps you going.
Hello people, first question here. I am just an amateur who definitely does not want to get ahead of himself since I haven’t even taking any sort of acting classes whatsoever lol. I was entertaining the possibility of acting because I like art and partaking of large pieces of art is obviously an appealing idea, but I was having some small doubts about the whole process. But before you answer, I would like to propose a hypothetical scenario. Let’s say that you are an actor or actress at a show in a streaming platform, to give an easy example. You give your all to this project and try to do your best to exceed at the paper that you have been cast to do, but for some reason such as a shaky plot or general animosity from the public over political/social commentary, the show ends up being absolutely terrible according to total earnings and the critics. Would that impact how much you are paid even if you had nothing to do with it? And as a follow up question, can this seriously impact your possibilities of being called for any role again or would that be based more of what casting directors think of your performance as opposed to how much you made the project earn? That’s pretty much all. Short post. Looking forward to any response.
I have never used it but am helping a friend of mine who is a fresh actor, to submit their video. I was trying to find “How To” videos on the Tube. Didn’t find and somewhere along the way, whether google search or whatever, a Reddit post from this community showed up mentioning the site. Then I opened the thread and read comments with people talking about paywalls, file size, essentially Frontier/Spirit of casting sites? Searched and saw some other threads mentioning similar things. So my question is, is it a scam? Is it worth it? Has anyone gotten jobs through it? Do you spend more using this site than Actors access—which does have a paid membership but also I’m not paying for every submission or file size or changing my photos around. Are the quality of jobs found on CN different than what you’d find on Actors Access. I know there are a lot of questions, just trying to give responders multiple entry points to provide an a sweep. My worry is my friend getting scammed for their naïvete and dreams.

I usually just lurk here, but wanted to let everyone know about a scam that I almost got roped into that I haven’t seen previously mentioned. Maybe someone else has encountered this, but just in case… Yesterday, I received a text from someone claiming to be an old classmate of mine. They mentioned a project we were in together so the only odd part so far was that she had seemed to change numbers, which even then I could see as plausible in the past 4 years since I talked to her. She mentioned she knew someone in Hollywood who was looking for someone for a project and she thought of me, asked if I would be interested and she would see if he was available since he was supposed to talk to another actress on teams, then let me know that he would be available in 20 minutes if I could make it work. I received a message from his “assistant” confirming (they just pulled the name of a random French influencer, producer pretended to be someone named Alex Friedman based in New York). I assumed the other actress dropped and I was fit into an opening in the schedule. Did a video call on teams and sent an email for a follow up call the next week as requested. Not gonna lie, things started to feel a little off because this was not how casting goes in my experience and from the research I’ve done, but every explanation was just plausible enough to sound convincing to someone still relatively new to the professional side of this. The more I started to try looking into the scenario and research after, the more things just weren’t adding up. I texted the number I had saved for my old classmate and lo and behold, she hadn’t changed her number. This was a freaky experience for sure and I wish I had just pulled out sooner when I wasn’t sure. It was just a video call but he claimed he worked in modeling as well and was evaluating for that so maybe my image will be used for AI now which I’m a bit worried about so hence the feeling stupid for not just ending the call earlier. They spent a lot of time having me do turns in like yoga outfits and bathing suites and such (nothing that people wouldn’t be able to see in real life at the beach or a gym cause I wouldn’t have done that), so that’s why I’m thinking AI. That didn’t feel normal and nothing I’ve read about casting ever mentioned that being normal, but I also didn’t want to miss out on something good if it happened to be real. I feel like I’ve heard crazier stories about actors getting real opportunities in this industry. That being said, I do know better than to fully trust honeyed words without significant verification, but I still let them get as far as they did. I got so caught up in the conversation and didn’t have time to research before and that’s how they get ya. It was so specific and so unnerving for someone to go as far as to go to my IMDd, pick an another actress from I project I did, confirm we went to the same school via her social media, and then pretend to be her. I consider myself cautious and I’m doing my best to be as smart as I can navigating this industry, but I still fell for part of it and I hate that I did. They didn’t get any money from me and I won’t be engaging further, but yikes. I’ve rambled a fair amount here so TLDR: got a super specific text from someone pretending to be another actress and classmate that I worked with before offering a meeting with a producer she knew for a potential acting opportunity but it didn’t turn out to actually be her.

I'm transitioning from voiceover classes to actually owning and operating a microphone and I've found myself flustered by how much there is to learn. There's a lot of the audio engineering world that is foreign to me. Like, I still don't really even understand what an EQ is, or how busses work. And when I begin to learn, it feels like I go down rabbit holes that are very specific to live instruments or singing as opposed to pure voiceover. So, voice actors: What is your workflow? What is your personal "preferred" vocal chain? How does it fit into your workflow? Do you find yourself editing out all of your breaths, or is there a plugin that is doing that work for you? I'm going to be watching a hell of a lot of general audio knowledge tutorials, but I figured while I'm at it, I should hit up the VA community here and ask: If you could go back in time, what is something you would teach yourself right off the bat? I have a RODE NT1 5th Gen & UA Volt 176 interface. I work in Logic Pro at the moment, as I've been making simple MIDI tracks in it for a while and it is similar to Garage Band. I know that many use Audacity, which I plan to download and get used to as well. I'm still working on getting a treated space together, I know that this is paramount. Current plan is to spend a good chunk of this next paycheck at Home Depot to get one of those pipe + blanket systems going for the time being.

I’m a union actor currently exclusively represented by one agent. I’ve decided to leave and have an offer from another agency that I’m planning to accept. My current agent is reluctant to let me go, so I’m trying to understand the practical mechanics of the transition. To be honest they are giving me a hella of a hard time, and I am extremely shook up and need guidance on what is considered a normal transition and what I can do on my end to keep things smooth. I’m going to contact the union and major casting platforms for official guidance, but I’d really appreciate firsthand experience from anyone who has done this. 1) what happens to callbacks, holds and bookings that come from submissions made by the first agent after you’ve moved to the new agency? If the old agent is no longer representing you or attached to you in the casting systems, who handles those opportunities and how does casting know who to contact? 2) Is there normally a notice/transition period between exclusive agencies, or can you move directly from one to another? 3) How quickly can the casting platforms be updated, and does the new agent typically handle that process? How long does and should it take to set up between reps? 4) Finally, are there any other practical issues I should be thinking about with existing submissions, auditions, callbacks, holds or bookings during the transition? I just want to make sure I understand the normal process and don’t mishandle any existing opportunities. Also if anyone has any stories you feel like sharing about difficult transitions and how you got through them, I'm game. I could really use the support.
16-year-old aspiring actor from Seattle trying to build a realistic path — looking for advice I’m 16 years old and I’m trying to figure out the best path toward becoming a professional actor. I live near Seattle, Washington, and acting is something I genuinely care about. I’m not expecting overnight success, but I want to take the craft seriously and build toward a career in film and television. Some things I’ve done so far: \- Written a screenplay (horror). \- Directed a short film with my siblings. \- Practiced monologues and worked on improving my acting. \- Taken acting-related classes. \- Done a stage combat/sword fighting workshop. My goal is to eventually build a reel, work on student films, improve my skills, and create a professional path. Right now, my plan is to do Running Start during my last two years of high school, improve my grades, and apply to acting programs. I’m interested in BFA/conservatory-style programs because I want serious training. Some schools I’m considering: \- Cornish College of the Arts \- USC School of Dramatic Arts \- NYU Tisch \- Juilliard \- UCLA \- Carnegie Mellon \- University of Washington My situation is complicated because I come from a strict Muslim family. My mom does not support acting as a career, and I’m worried about how my family will react if I seriously pursue it. I also have personal boundaries about certain roles and scenes I would accept. When you’re thinking about joining an acting class what things are you looking for? What makes you say “no thanks.” And what makes you say “these are my people?” Years ago, I was in a class with a well known teacher, and after about 2-3 months I started honestly looking at my acting and the acting I saw in class. When I was honest I didn’t feel like I was improving, nor was I being taught specific ways to improve. I was given feedback , but no clear approach. And when I watched the work from other actors in the class, I started asking myself If I paid money to watch this would I want my money back? And 99% of the time my answer was - “I want my money back.” Anyway, I’m curious how you decide on a class and how do you determine if the class is really helping you.
For like, a Hollywood series for example. While it's a big production sure, they probably won't need the craziest experienced actors to just fill the gaps right?

I'm just seeking some advice on my career and such. I've been acting in theatre since the second grade (I'm 23 now). I went to college, I've done multiple short films (student and independent), and I was a part of a national live event (NHL Winter Classic). I know it's a difficult time in the industry at the moment, and I don't live in a major hub (FL). I feel like I have good materials (professional headshots I got taken in ATL, a pretty full resume, and an acting reel of things I've done). Despite this, I've submitted to 30-40 agencies and have gotten nothing except one rejection. I'm trying to move to either ATL or Savannah in Febuary so that will hopefully open more opportunities for me, but I just feel a bit lost as to what else I could be doing. Unfortunately, my area doesn't really have advanced acting classes or tons of opportunities. I apply to everything I can on Backstage and Actors Access but rarely get responses. It's hard not to get discouraged, and I know it's most likely not due to anything I'm doing. I'm just wondering if there's anything I could be doing to either get seen more or better my chances? Or if anyone has insight on ATL vs Savannah, or if I should just move to LA? I just don't know what else I could be doing in the meantime while I wait to move.

I think Jon Bernthal is an amazing actor. I know a lot of people say he gets typecast because he often plays the same kind of tough, damaged, intense characters. But honestly, I think people confuse a character archetype with an actor’s ability. I just watched *Punisher: The Last Kill*, and throughout the entire movie he blew me away. It’s not just the action or the anger. It’s the quieter moments. The way he carries grief, guilt, pain, and exhaustion without overdoing it. Half the time he’s barely saying anything, but you still know exactly what Frank Castle is feeling. For me, that’s what great acting is. I don’t care if an actor plays similar roles. If, while I’m watching them, I completely forget every other character they’ve played and only see the person on screen, they’ve done their job. Watching Jon Bernthal, I don’t see Jon Bernthal—I just see Frank Castle. Maybe that’s why I’ve never understood the “he’s typecast” criticism. If you can make me believe in the character every single time, isn’t that exactly what acting is supposed to be?
I miss acting! The creativity on it, improvisation, stage school, reading scripts, reading plays - all of it. But I don’t miss the seriousness - auditions, booking profesional jobs (once in a blue moon!), theatre teachers who crush everyone’s spirit for the ‘sake of art’ and having to constantly be involved in order to stay relevant. The thought of making money out of this or making it big and quitting my regular job just doesn’t appeal to me anymore like it once did. So I guess what I’m asking is - is it ok to participate in acting but only as a hobby? Or is that really annoying for all the serious actors - us hobbyist kind of just there getting in the way.

Asking because I’ve been in the business for more than 20 years, and the rules indeed change. Some say, yes -- but only for more independent castings like on the FB groups. No- for casting and agents- as your online profiles already show who you are, in the email or website submission, alongside your uploaded headshots. I’ve created the two different versions of my actor resume, with just my information at the top. Another version with the thumbnail at the left or right, my info neatly opposite and readable. As seen from other online actor examples. So, what do you think? The thumbnail headshot included only for independent casting auditions, with the straight info resume- for agents?

I’m a 28-year-old aspiring actress/screenwriter and I’m a quadriplegic who’s been in a wheelchair since I was two years old. Anyway I’m writing a story about two Latina sisters living in the rough parts of San Antonio, TX (my hometown) during the mid ‘90s struggling to get by after the tragic death of their father. I will be playing the younger sister Alex, who aside from being a quadriplegic like me, also suffers from extreme anxiety and PTSD stemming from the day her father died as she was the one who found his body. I don’t have any mental illness in my own life but I want to portray this character as real as possible and I don’t want to offend anyone who lives with this type of illness in real life. The only inspiration I can think of is Sally Field’s performance in the 1976 television film *Sybil* and that one scene in *Steel Magnolias* where Julia Roberts is having a diabetic attack in the salon and Sally Field is trying to get her to drink the orange juice but she refuses. Can y’all please recommend some good acting tips and tricks to authentically portray this specific type of character?

Idk of this is the right sub. But How does a normal person find these casting calls from big companies like marvel or Warner bros or sumthin. I don’t have an aunt sending me WhatsApp links like Imán Vellani or help from the punisher to record my self-tapes like Tom Holland. Do I think I can be the next Marvel star? No. But it won’t be from lack of trying ?. When I dream, I dream big, impossible, unrealistic dreams. Who says I can’t be the next avenger casted? Or next Jedi or sumthin. No bus seriously. should I mark my designation on websites and auditions as actress and go for fem roles?

Also, use this thread to post your headshots for feedback, get info on your age range/type, find good headshot photographers, ask any questions you may have about headshots. It is advised that you do at least some basic research on what actor headshots look like -- composition, framing, lighting. You will find a Google Image search for "actor headshots" to be very helpful for this. Non-professional shots are fine for age/typecasting, but please keep in mind that one picture is a difficult way to go about this. Video of you moving and speaking would be ideal, but understandably more difficult to post. For what it's worth, the branding workshop at SAG-AFTRA recommends a five-year age range. That's inclusive, so for example 19-23, 25-29, 34-38, etc.
​ Hey everyone. I'm a 17yo guy from a small town in Europe (Poland) and I'm feeling completely lost. I really want to be a film actor, but I have absolutely no idea what to do next. Here is my situation: No local options: The only acting group in my town is a local community theater filled with 11-13 year old kids doing basic plays. I want to work with adults or people my age who take this seriously, not do kids' shows. Zero acting community: I have absolutely no actors around me, and honestly, nobody in my personal life really understands this passion or what I'm trying to achieve. It feels incredibly isolating. What I'm doing right now: I started an Instagram where I post English self-tapes. My accent isn't perfect yet, but I'm trying my best. The Problem: I’ve stopped posting recently because I have zero inspiration for monologues. Trying to find good scenes, direct myself, and act to a blank wall all alone is starting to exhaust me. I feel like I'm hitting a wall. Has anyone else started in a complete vacuum like this? Where do you find good, modern scripts for self-tapes? And how do you keep the motivation alive when nobody around you gets it? Any advice would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!
Hello actors! I’m an actor based in the UK and I’m having issues with my self taping. I’ve got an agent and everything but I’ve got a limited space in my house to film. So I often film in my bedroom. It’s fine when I stand up as you can see my chest up but it’s sitting down when I have to tape is an issue. You only see my shoulders up and I know the filming recommendation is chest up for filming but I have a big chair in my room but I tried to do it on my bed for the last tape which removes the chair in the back. But if I move the camera any lower. You see my bed. However I still have an issue with the framing shot. Any ideas. I can’t film anywhere else in my house due to the space.

ok so I did double and triple check the FAQ to make sure that my particular question wasn’t answered, so don’t hurt me. I’m a 17 y/o high-school senior and I’m looking into fully beginning my acting career. I’m not a true beginner, i’ve been acting on stage and been in acting classes since age 6 or 7 and am consistently involved in my school theater. Well, it’s time for college apps and i’m looking at what to do with the rest of my life. In a perfect world where I had unlimited money I would 1110% choose acting. But unfortunately my family is middle class and I don’t know if I can afford to be an acting major and not starve and die. So, at the moment i’m looking at getting started on sites before I make a concrete decision, just to have my foot in the door. I’m setting up an Actors Access account and I need to input a resume obviously but all I have is my highschool productions.Not to toot my own horn, but i’ve been in many of them and my school ia known in the area for being pretty darn good. But, can I even put highschool stuff on a resume? is that unprofessional or dumb? and in that case, will I really have to start with a nothingburger resume even when I have spent so much time and effort on my acting? I have never tried to audition for anything on-screen before now. Just school productions and classes as well as some regional classes.
Hi - NYC based actor, I was just offered representation from a manager at Citizen Skull Management and when I asked for a contract to review, the rep said that we don't need a contract which just seems kind of sketchy. Is this normal? And generally, has anyone worked with this company and have any thoughts about their experience? This is my first time having a rep so I'd really like it to work out, however I don't want to rush into it out of eagerness. Let me know how you think I should approach this.
Can anyone tell me their experience with Citizen Skull and Mandy Del Rio in particular? I just had a meeting with her for potential representation and I love her. I just want to be sure she and this company are compatible with my career goals. I’ve several multiple co-stars, a recurring guest, and led an educational series and was a supporting lead in a SAG Feature film opposite known actors. I’m trying to move into guest star, recurring and series regular territory moving forward. Who has worked with her and based on your experience and the kinds of auditions she secures for you, do you think she could be a good fit for my career goals?
I am a new indie game developer named SodaFrizz! Currently I have Hellbound: Reign of El Diablo released, and I need voice actors for the sequel to it. All slots have been filled except for "Zyne". Zyne was the protagonist and villain in Hellbound 1. In Hellbound 2, he's a ghost. Not literally, but he never actually appears- only in the occasional flashback! As for his voice, I would be searching for a Hispanic voice actor since he is mixed Hispanic (English and Spanish accents welcome) and while he is a male character, his tone would have to be androgynous. This character is also a trans man; the voice actor doesn't have to be, but I would like to make it known that he indeed is one. This is a PAID role too, for $25 an hour.
