Casting Associates VS Casting Directors

Casting Associates VS Casting Directors

Posted on Aug 17th

LA Based SAG Actress here! I just signed with a new manager and I'm being submitted to great projects, but have yet to secure an audition. It's only been 4 weeks since I signed, so I'm not stressing, but I do want to higher my chances of getting called in. This is my first real legit big rep, and this is my first time even being thrown into the mix for big TV shows. I have a great reel (for never having reps, but I do tons of student thesis films as the lead), I'm enrolled in ongoing acting classes with a known studio, have some solid headshots from popular LA photographers (but I'm shooting some new pics next month per my reps suggestion), and the next step is just putting my face out there to casting directors, so I'm (attempting) to sign up for some CD workshops. I noticed that alot of the Casting Director workshops in LA feature Casting Associates instead of name Casting Directors. Do audition requests get sent out by the Casting Associates choosing? Or are they more of an assistant to the Casting Directors and help with the backend stuff? I guess I'm just confused on what they do. And obviously I know that these workshops don't promise anything and is a learning experience/class. I just dont want to throw all this money and time into CD workshops in LA, if Casting Associates have no say in the selection process or even look at submissions. And obviously Casting Associates become Casting Directors one day, but I'm just focused on the present and my situation currently.

Uploading self-tapes to AA ruins quality. How do I fix this?!

Posted on Aug 17th

I have an iPhone 16, which is supposed to have a good quality camera. I record all of my self-tapes with it and use a ring light and backdrop. When I’m in my Photos app and viewing the videos, they look perfectly fine and are nice and clear, but as soon as I upload them to Actors Access or YouTube or even Google Drive, the videos get this awful over-exposed and over-saturated hue to them! I’ve tried editing the exposure levels and whatnot to cancel it out but it still looks terrible! It always looks like my eyes are bloodshot, but then parts of my face are yellow. I’m tired of my self-tapes being ruined by the quality. How do I fix this? I’m going to be exposing myself a little bit, but the first image is how it looks normally on my iPad and iPhone. The second image is how it looks once uploaded onto Actors Access or other sites. Edit: Someone pointed out it seems to be an issue with HDR. Going forward, I will keep it turned off and use SDR instead, BUT this particular self-tape is already recorded and involved multiple takes and parts and I need to submit it ASAP, so if anyone has any advice on how to edit it enough to reduce the saturation that would also be amazing! ?

Is the A.C.T Semester Worth It for an Aspiring Screen Actor?

Is the A.C.T Semester Worth It for an Aspiring Screen Actor?

Posted on Aug 17th

Hello! I was looking into the A.C.T (American Conservatory Theater) Acting Semester, which is a 4 month, full time program for conservatory training. Their classes focus on acting styles, voice/verse/character, etc. with a lot of work on group/monologue performances for theater. They don’t have an end-of-semester production or anything like that, but the classes are small (8 ppl) and you get to know a variety of faculty.  My dilemma is that its going to cost $10,000+ and also that I want to go into screen acting, not theater. I know the skills are basically the same but I’m not sure it's going to be worth the price. The main reason I want to do this is so I can get exposure to the acting industry before I commit to something like an acting MFA (which is gonna cost way more than $10k) or moving to LA. Also, for applying to MFA acting programs, I would need references which I hope the instructors at A.C.T will be able to provide.  I’ve been in a few community plays, but nothing huge so far. I’m wondering if it may be better to just self-audition for commercials/TV shows on AA or get involved with student films instead of doing the semester. Another option would be weekly workshops/classes but I feel they don't provide enough exposure and that I won't be able to connect with the instructors enough for a letter of rec. The only reason I’m leaning towards the A.C.T semester is because I learn best with a rigid structure (their classes are 9 am to 5 pm) and I know it’ll force me to learn quickly much more than any other environment could. Time and commitment is not an issue for me, I'm on a gap year rn. If anyone has heard of the A.C.T semester, or has any experience with it, do you think it’s worth it? Would it hold any weight if I apply to Acting MFAs? Would it help me get an agent (unlikely imo because we don’t produce anything like a demo reel)? Thank you so much!!!

Honestly I’ve been interested in medicine for a long time but recently I’ve really been wanting to become an actor. I feel like acting is my passion but relying on medicine is like my safe zone for a secure career. I’m only 15 but I’ve really been wanting to become an actor for a while now and I know if I eventually pursue medicine, acting will always be in the back of my mind. Also I don’t come from a rich family, I’d say I’m low income so I can’t afford some things tbh. I know that having a family with good finance makes it easier to be an actor so I feel guilty for wanting to be an actor. Honestly I’m only teen though and I’m thinking of pursuing this ngl. Any tips on where to start? I’m thinking of local theater but if you have any tips on how to find an agency or anything else pls lmk. Also is it possible to go to college majoring in something in the pre med direction while trying to pursue acting or is that impossible??

How do I suppress a scream without disturbing neighbours?

How do I suppress a scream without disturbing neighbours?

Posted on Aug 17th

I KNOW THIS WAS ALREADY QUESTIONED AND ANSWERED BUT HMO So me and my family are moving in a few months, we’re not sure if we’ll move into a villa or an apartment. But I need to be prepared. I wanna audition for this role that needs screaming, but I don’t wanna disturb my future neighbours if I still have said role or get new roles with screaming. Now i know what you’re gonna say, “Talk to the neighbours“ this “Let them know beforehand” that. Those are great ideas dont get me wrong. But unfortunately for me, I have social anxiety AND I dont live in a western country. So the conversation would just be very awkward and/or they wouldn't understand what a voice actor is. Now there are voice actors in my area of course, but they all work for Disney or something and record exclusively in booths. I cannot stress how little I would want to talk to my neighbours. I will literally leave my role if it requires me talking the neighbours out. Now im not sure how thick or thin, big or small the apartment will be. But regardless, I’ll need a way to suppress a full blown scream. You know when you scream into a pillow but it barely makes any sound? How can i recreate that but with a microphone at a reasonable distance from me? Now my mic is small and so is my booth (its a closet), so I can easily just scream into a pillow and but my mic inbetween my mouth and the pillow. But not only is that disgusting, i presume it’ll peak the microphone even with the gain down. TLDR: How do I scream so that it’s a normal scream for the microphone, but sounds like im screaming into a pillow for anyone else listening from the outside? (IM NOT TALKING THE NEIGHBOURS OUT)

My best advice for voice acting is let go of being comfortable lol there’s nothing complacent about voice acting you must abandon your comfort zone try as many voices as you can a good easy way to start is find characters whose voice tone is similar to yours and start mastering characters like that for exactly if your voice is naturally deeper then search for deep voice characters to practice as a kind of safe space but don’t get comfortable there push to see either how high or how deep your voice can go take what you already have and master it then tweak it to do different types of voices I also am willing to answer any questions you may have or specific areas you want advice in put them in the comments and I’ll answer them best I can

How's the acting scene in Texas, especially in Austin? I want to become a great actor and have been taking classes for 5 years, but I think I might have to go to Texas for a bit. I know LA and NYC have the most productions but with the whole tax incentives, will Texas become a major market soon? Also, I wonder if I should live in Texas and pursue acting from there, and then move to LA/NYC later. Any thoughts?

I've trained in Martial arts since I was 7 or 8 years old and have been doing so for a while. While I want to be versatile I do notice actors like Jackie Chan or Jet Li has trained in some form of Wushu or performance based Martial art. I train in a variety of stuff and wouldn't lie and say I'm a pro fighter or anything but I have the skills. However, I am curious if in particular there is something I should learn if I plan to get big into that kind of genre or scene (obviously I want to do more than be a action man but I do feel my skill set should have some use on screen)

⚠️ STRICT CONTENT & AUDIO WARNING — PLEASE READ EVERY WORD: This is definitely not a PG-13 story. This is a zero-compromise psychological thriller and body horror project dealing with unblinking, raw, and disturbing themes—including severe physical trauma, psychological dissociation, and toxic, abusive human actions. No Moralizing or Selective Squeamishness: This story does not sugarcoat, excuse, or glorify its characters' actions. If you are comfortable with dark sci-fi violence, but draw the line when human cruelty and psychological violation get too real, do not message me. You must narrate the script exactly as written without flinching, judging, or attempting to moralize the material. Performance Style (No Robotic / Monotone Readers): Looking for a dynamic, living performance—not a stiff, flat audiobook voice. You must naturally shift tones, carry heavy emotional weight, and capture the sharp, volatile intensity of the scenes. Casting Requirement: Looking for a young female voice actor narrator with a native American accent. (Please do not apply if your natural accent or performance style does not match this requirement). Zero Tolerance for Wasted Time: If dark, visceral content makes you hesitate or back out later, save us both time and do not message me. A Collaborative Process & Check-Ins: This is an active partnership. If hired, you are expected to maintain clear communication and send sample audio clips for review at agreed-upon milestones rather than ghosting. Pristine Audio Required: This is a professional audiobook narration job at $350 PFH. Absolute zero background noise, mouth clicks, heavy breathing, or room reverb. If your home studio isn't broadcast-clean, do not apply. Turnaround Time & Workflow: Once a contract is signed and a chapter batch is assigned, the completed, pristine audio files must be delivered within 14 days. Casting Call for a short film

Casting Call for a short film

Posted on Aug 16th

Hello everyone! I’m just about finished developing a short WLW (women-loving-women) film screenplay and am currently moving into the casting/production stage. I’m primarily a writer/director and have very little acting experience myself, so rather than starring in my own film, my team and I are looking for actors who are interested in helping bring this story to life. I’m looking for aspiring or established actors between the ages of 20–35 of all experience levels who would be willing to entertain the idea of starring in a small, indie independently produced film that may appear at a film festival. At this stage, compensation will be limited, and I want to be completely transparent about that. The primary things I can offer are a finished film for your portfolio, exposure, creative experience, and the opportunity to work with a small team that genuinely cares about a project. If you’re someone who loves acting, filmmaking, or simply wants to gain experience and be part of something creative, we’d love to hear from you. The Story: On the way to say goodbye to one of the most important people in her life, a grieving woman unexpectedly meets someone who reminds her that she hasn’t lost her ability to say hello to someone new. Alternatively\*: During a drive, two people learn and explore the meaning of life, both traveling toward the same destination for completely different reasons — one toward an ending, the other toward a beginning.\* We are currently based in USA Central America, so travel may be necessary. We are also locating to LA for a short period of time during shooting. No travel is required there. We plan to start a GoFundMe/crowdfunding campaign along with the funds we currently have to help cover travel and production-related expenses for selected cast members. However, I want to be upfront that traveling internationally may still be a significant commitment. Though, we are prepared to take the brunt force of the cost! If traveling to the filming location isn’t realistic for you, we completely understand. The casting process will be almost entirely virtual and will consist of three phases before filming. Actors of all races, ethnicities, backgrounds, and experience levels are encouraged to reach out! 1 Initial Submission You’ll submit a short acting tape/portfolio to a secure email. This can include: A monologue, An emotional scene, A scene from another project, Or another personal demonstration of your acting ability. The submission should be between 2–7 minutes. Along with your tape, you’ll also provide your preferences and boundaries regarding what you are and are not comfortable filming. There is no explicit sexual content in this film. There is a brief kiss scene and some implied intimacy between characters, but intimacy itself is not depicted on screen. 2 Character Audition After the initial submissions are reviewed, selected actors will receive a character breakdown along with approximately 2+ minutes of dialogue/screenplay material. This stage will give you the opportunity to act specifically as the character you’re auditioning for and show your interpretation of the material. You’ll also have the opportunity to tell us more about yourself, your creative interests, and anything you feel you could bring to the character. I want actors to have room to make the character their own, rather than simply reading exactly what is written on the page. 3 Meet the team This is where you will meet cast members and crew in a secure videoconference. We will also be upfront about the individuals receiving your work and if you prefer that route you may audition to a crew member LIVE via videoconference. We already have a team working on areas such as: Makeup, Lighting , Sound, Camera etc. You will get to meet them all. Even if you’re relatively new to acting, please don’t be afraid to reach out. This is an independent project, and I’m much more interested in your ability to connect with the material, collaborate, and bring something genuine to a character than simply how long your résumé is. PSA: This is a collaborative project. You’ll be working alongside other actors, directors, and crew members, so communication and teamwork are extremely important. We’re looking for people who are: Punctual and dependable. Comfortable collaborating with others Creative and willing to experiment. Respectful of boundaries. Open to feedback. Final, Passionate about filmmaking and/or acting!! We want to create an environment where everyone feels respected, heard, and comfortable being creative\*\*.\*\* If this sounds like something you’d like to be a part of, PM me or comment with your email! In the Email or PM please include: Name: Age: General Location aka State Best way to contact you: # or email A bit about yourself if wanted Acting clips/portfolio (if available) the relate to phase 1 If you’re ready, feel free to send an acting clip that could be useful for Phase 1 of the casting process. I’m really hoping to find people who are excited about the story and want to help make it something real!!

The Mysterious NDB

The Mysterious NDB

Posted on Aug 16th

I’m a SAG actor and just want to note that I’m tired of getting f\*\*\*ed over by productions. just worked a gig this past week that claimed they called and NDB and lost out on like 6 meal penalties. I was in holding the entire time and not once did they call out an NDB. I remember actually making a comment at the very cheap breakfast they provided, but stopped complaining as I saw EVERYONE was eating it. don’t get me wrong, there were more non union than SAG that day…but they said there was a sag breakfast truck we had access to which I find HILARIOUS considering not a SINGLE person around me had a different food plate. I’m sure there was a separate truck blocks away from holding, but to claim we had access to it? Same thing happened with lunch where we walked in two hours late, and there was our lunch boxes up and cold. I felt bad, but considering all the food safety parasite stuff that is happening, I wasn’t about to eat meat that had been sitting out for over two hours. And I even asked catering and they said this is what they had. Lo and behold, 20 minutes go by and my two friends who are stand ins for the day walk in with a hot fresh plate of food. Turns out there was an area away from holding with hot fresh food…when I tell you i was flabbergasted. my little tush marched over there and grabbed a plate of food So fast. Again, no announcement was ever made. I’m sure if there was anything mentioned it happened quite literally just once so they could take advantage of the fact BG was mostly children and their parents today. Obvi with most children being non union, and their being with their parents, who don’t know how to act on set (I say this because our scenes kept getting delayed because the main actor kept getting stopped by these parents and kids because they were asking for pictures) it’s smart af. They were so loud I couldn’t hear anything that was being said anyway. Oh ontop of the bs NDB… I had to stop eating to take pictures. So like…if it was a true NDB that wouldn’t have happened. I was like one of the first numbers called, and obvs they started w/ SAG first…but like we got breakfast and they didn’t think to a.stop us while we got breakfast to mention the truck, and b. hey we’re about to take wardrobe pictures just fyi or c. yall are on your NDB, so we wont stop you to take pictures and we will come back to yalls numbers in 15. it also started raining and we were outside all day which was annoying but I guess all in the days work. We tried getting a cool off break from the SAG rep that appeared but alas no…got sunburned pretty nice that day and yes I spf twice. oh and my water bottle? Filled with coke rather than oh you know water. anyway just wanted to vent. I’m tired of having to fight just to get the basics. it’d be different if it was a meal penalty or two, but 6 meal penalties is a lot of money. we got lunch three hours late and I know that because catering confirmed the food was just sitting from when the lunch call should have been.

If wrong location, please advise. Have read numerous articles that state that actors don't get paid/residuals for anything other than broadcast and syndication, which made it appear that actors are getting cheated. Just read an article where Matthew McConaughey said he made a ton of money from in-flight views of an old movie of his. So how does reimbursement for in-flight movies work? Any other source of income/residuals?

Private classes or group online classes

Private classes or group online classes

Posted on Aug 16th

Hey everyone! I’m 22F and I’ve been wanting to get into acting for some time now. Unfortunately, there are no theaters/studios that offer adult acting classes within even a 2 hour drive of me. There are some previous actors in the area who will teach private lessons, but they’re around $75 hourly or more. I’ve also been able to find some online classes, and they’re between 20-50 per hour when the cost is broken down. My main concern with both classes is that neither include actually working with other actors/students throughout the class. Either way though, unless I move, these are my only options. Would a $75 per hour class be worth it, even though I’m really just wanting to dip my toes in the water? It’s pretty out of my budget right now, so I’d only be able to go 1-2 times a month.

Choosing a different major apart from acting

Choosing a different major apart from acting

Posted on Aug 16th

Hi everybody, in two days I will start my film major (which is not just film because it includes other media like TV, streaming, advertising). I chose this major as an alternative to my true passion, acting/musical theater/live performing. My parents recommended that I did something else apart from acting to sustain myself because it is very hard to get into the acting industry. Yes, I know that working in the audiovisual sector is hard too but at least there are some jobs one can get with the major, unlike acting, where you are chosen through auditions and where opportunities are more limited. Besides, if I was choosing something that was not acting, I thought I should choose the closest thing to acting. Something that would at least allow me to create stories and work with actors. I'm currently struggling with anxiety about starting this major. I'm worried that I won't have time to pursue my passion at the same time, because next year I want to start a more intense training, like 12 hour training per week, going to train 3 times a week. It's nice to have other tools apart from acting, which can be very unstable. But I don't want to start uni feeling unmotivated or disappointed. Is there any advice from anyone who struggles or has struggled with this? With the strong desire to work full time as artists but still having to earn a stable income?

[Paid] Looking for two Voice Actors for a game cinematic

[Paid] Looking for two Voice Actors for a game cinematic

Posted on Aug 16th

Hey there, *(this is a repost as reddit's AI decided to filter it the first time we posted after a few hours)* we're a tiny indie team, currently finishing a cinematic for a game, set in a sci-fi setting, featuring 3 characters - male, female and a digital ship intelligence. We're looking for 2 roles here, male and female in their 20s or 30s. One of the candidates will have the range to also voice the ship assistant (neutral but not robotic, classic synthetic voice after post-processing). * [Here are the characters in motion with mocap (WIP)](https://sz-portfolio.my.canva.site/va-audition) The female is the lieutenant of the ship; brave, determined but also warm and caring as they have known each other for over a decade. The male assumes the captain role; steadfast, bold and a born leader but not quite himself in this cinematic. He does not have a very deep voice, as some submissions so far have assumed, just because he is a captain. Let the visuals of his character in motion inspire you to find a tone and cadence, as we want to hear your personal take. Neither has any strong accent. The lieutenant (female) is at approximately 150 words whereas the captain (male) is at 250-300 words as he's also speaking outside the cinematic in the gameplay part of the intro. The dialogue between the two starts off mild and gets a bit heated, albeit without shouting. For the recording sessions, you'll get the script (with tone annotations) and the cinematic (still WIP at that time) to work with. I'm very happy to closely work with you and help you shape the voice. Price-wise, we are looking at baseline $30 for the female and $60 for the male with the additional increase for whoever will speak the ship intelligence lines. Likely PayPal as we are in the EU but open to other feasible options, we'll find a solution. Should we see a good fit, we're definitely interested in discussing long-term collaboration for those two lead roles as the project is already set to continue all throughout the next year. If you're interested, please submit your audition [**here**](https://tally.so/r/b5R1D0) with a soft deadline until the 25th of August. (If you can see this text, it's still ongoing and I'll update it once we've filled the role). The script will be revealed to you when you select your role on the form. Not sure how necessary these disclaimers are but obviously no AI, your voice will not be used to anything AI at all, only for this cinematic (+gameplay for male) and nothing more. The audition lines are not "real" in the sense that they are not in the cinematic or anywhere else and were specifically drafted for this audition. We're not corpos. Also nothing even remotely nsfw, romantic or weird. If you have already sent a submission, you do not need to do it again, we received all your submissions and listened to all of them so far and really appreciate all the voices we heard. Happy to clear things up if there are questions. I'm looking forward to hearing your voices! Thank you ?

Hi! I’m a European-based film director, currently in NYC, looking for ways to deepen and expand my work with actors. I’ve directed several shorts and debut feature film that received international recognition. Much of my work so far has involved casting outside the professional acting world, particularly children, older people, and first-time performers. Working with a non-professional trained cast has been incredibly rewarding and has resulted in some remarkable performances. At this point in my career, though, I’d like to expand the tools I have when working with professionally trained actors and deepen my understanding of the acting process. I’m interested in high-level training, whether acting classes, scene study, intensive workshops, or programs specifically designed for directors. I’m also very open to taking acting classes myself. I had some exposure to Meisner during film school and I’m looking for something that can genuinely challenge and expand my existing practice. I’d love to hear what you think could be most valuable at this stage of my practice ❤️ Thank you!

how to sound masculine without just...lowering your pitch?

Posted on Aug 15th

Hiya! New-ish voice actor here, I really want to do more masculine roles but I am truly struggling with sounding masculine. I have a really low voice range for an AFAB person I believe, so it's not like I struggle with hitting low notes. I just...sound like a woman hitting said low notes. On some of my lowest notes I do sound masculine but I'm unsure how to recreate that consistently. I would love to be able to sound masculine whilst in my normal range rather than only when I'm speaking in a really low pitch, but all of the tutorials I've seen online I might be misunderstanding, since they've only helped improve my vocal range, rather than *actually* sound masculine. I feel so close and yet so far! Any help or pointing to easy-to-understand guides would be helpful. Or just plain text...I feel like I may be misunderstanding video guides because English is not my first language so sometimes it's difficult to parse what is being conveyed in certain sentences (especially when the creator uses different terms for the same thing interchangeably, I don't know why it messes with my head so much)

Hello! First of all, I want to make it clear that I have zero experience in acting and that I’ve never taken an acting class. I was wondering how actors in big movies, like John Wick, make it look as though they’ve been using weapons such as swords and guns their entire lives, even though, in reality, they may have only trained with them for a few months. They also manage to perform with so much emotion and confidence. I’m a martial artist, and I perform with a sword, but all of my routines look quite unemotional. Yes, I shout and do all of that, but it doesn’t look like an actual fight. I don’t have that same confidence and intensity that actors have, and that’s a really important part of my sport. Do you have any acting tips that could help me improve my performance and make it look like I’m genuinely in “fight mode”?

Has anyone here worked with Cathryn Sullivan? Is she a good acting coach?

Has anyone here worked with Cathryn Sullivan? Is she a good acting coach?

Hey everyone! I’m looking into taking acting classes with Cathryn Sullivan in the Dallas area and wanted to hear from people who have actually trained with her or are familiar with her program. I’m 23 and basically starting from zero when it comes to acting. I’m interested in getting into film/TV acting, but I also have some stage fright and want to build confidence and learn the fundamentals properly instead of trying to figure everything out on my own. For anyone who has taken her classes: \- What was your overall experience like? \- Is she good for complete beginners? \- What is her teaching/coaching style like? \- Did you feel like you actually improved after taking her classes? \- Is her program more geared toward film/TV, commercials, or acting in general? \- Do you think the classes are worth the cost? \- Is there anything you wish you knew before signing up? I’ve seen that she has worked with a lot of actors over the years, but I’d really like to hear some firsthand experiences before committing. Thanks!

20F moving to NJ/NYC area to pursue acting/musical theatre. What advice do you have for me?

20F moving to NJ/NYC area to pursue acting/musical theatre. What advice do you have for me?

Posted on Aug 15th

As the title says, I’m moving from California to New Jersey in a month. I’ve been doing theatre for eight years now and have a good amount of community theatre credits under my belt. I want to pursue a career in musical theatre as well as TV and Film. I’ve been doing singing since I was 5, on and off dancing classes since I was 12, and acting coaching for a year now. I also just recently transitioned to coaching for TV/Film. I feel like I’m in the best financial situation I can be in, as I’m moving in with family + going to be working at my family’s business. I did not/am not attending theatre school as my family discouraged it and wanted me to get a degree in another field instead to support my dreams financially. My training has mainly been through doing community theatre/coaching. I switched to an online program for my degree so I could forge this path in the first place. What advice would you have for me as someone who is moving all the way to the other side of the nation, and wanting to work professionally as an actor? I’m trying to be as realistic as possible, since I know that it’ll be significantly harder for me since I’m not going to a conservatory or BFA program. Any advice helps ❤️

Simply put, I need 2 people to get a conversation recorded of 2 German soldiers for a WW2 game. German speaking required, German accent appreciated. So basically, I'm a mission maker/dev in a military simulator game called Arma 3. I'm currently tinkering with a World War 2 mission where a German defector is transporting a group of British special forces through a checkpoint. And I just need a conversation between the driver of the truck & the checkpoint guard while he smuggles him across. Then another line for the driver before he's either abandoned or killed by the players. I have a script written up already Never hired voice actors but its only 5 lines for the guard & 7 for the driver. I was thinking $20 USD paypal each for both VAs if thats a fair price

Moving to LA as a Midwesterner

Moving to LA as a Midwesterner

Posted on Aug 15th

Hi everyone! I’m looking for some honest advice about potentially moving to LA and giving acting a real shot. I’m originally from the Metro Detroit area and have wanted to move to Los Angeles and pursue acting since I was in high school. Life obviously took me in a different direction — I went to college, got my master’s, and eventually started medical school. I’m now entering my fourth year, and I’m at a point where I have some flexibility in where I complete my remaining clinical rotations. For the first time, I’m seriously considering finishing some of my clinical training in Southern California and using that opportunity to pursue acting at the same time. I’m currently in Chicago and have actually started picking up acting jobs here, which has made me wonder what could happen if I put myself in a market with more opportunities and really expanded my outreach. I’m not planning to drop out of medical school or throw away everything I’ve worked for. I fully intend to finish my degree. I just don’t want medicine to become the reason I never gave another dream a genuine chance. My parents think I’m a little crazy, especially because of LA’s cost of living, and I completely understand where they’re coming from. Moving from the Midwest to Southern California would be a huge financial and lifestyle adjustment, especially as a student. At the same time, I keep thinking about the alternative: staying where I’m comfortable, finishing medical school, moving on to residency, and always wondering what would have happened if I had gone to LA when I finally had the opportunity. I’ve spent years telling myself, “after college,” “after my master’s,” “after I start medical school,” and now I’m entering my final year of medical school. At some point, I feel like I have to stop pushing this dream further into the future. I know acting is incredibly competitive and that moving to LA doesn't guarantee anything. I’m not expecting to move there and magically become successful. I just want to be able to say that I genuinely tried. For anyone who has made the Midwest → LA move, especially actors, creatives, medical students/residents, or people balancing a traditional career with something creative: **Was it worth it?** How difficult was the cost-of-living adjustment? Is LA still worth being in for someone trying to expand their acting opportunities? And if you were in my position — entering your final year of medical school with the ability to spend some of it in Southern California — would you take the chance? I think I’m more afraid of looking back and realizing I never tried than I am of trying and having it not work out.

I’m definitely interested in it. It seems to be the only masters RADA offers for actors. Sounds like a great course. Wondering what it’s like.

I just wanted to shout out the community here. It’s been exactly one year since I stepped on a movie set for the first time as a BG actor and my life was changed. I got upgraded out of nowhere and it set me down a path of giving this a shot. Shorts, student films, commercials - I’ve done all of it inside a year and I wouldn’t have been able to navigate half of it without answers from fellow actors here both to my posts and others that I came across. This past year has been a ride, and to cap it off I just finished 5 working days as a principal on a substantial indie film with some real acting legends. So thanks to my fellow acting redditors. Whether you guys know it or not, the time you take to answer questions and provide information for us newbies goes a LONG way.

Alright so im not going to sugarcoat it im a teen with a REALLY cracky voice, sometimes its fine but sometimes i just cant do anything because of it. its been like this for a few months and ive had to stop my YT channel for a while too, im not sure why but when i sing i almost never get voice cracks unless i shift pitch WAY too quik. Second of all. I dont reallt have any voice acting experience at all. id love to get into it but i cant find anyplace online that offers ''work'' to teens even without me needing pay. I always get shood off. Without further ado my 2 real questions are: How do i fix this horrible voice of mine and is there a reason why singing doesnt affect it and Is there something that gives Teens a chance to voice act

[Paid] Looking for two Voice Actors for a game cinematic

[Paid] Looking for two Voice Actors for a game cinematic

Posted on Aug 15th

Hey there, we're a tiny indie team, currently finishing a cinematic for a game, set in a sci-fi setting, featuring 3 characters - male, female and a digital ship intelligence. We're looking for 2 roles here, male and female in their 20s or 30s. One of the candidates will have the range to also voice the ship assistant (neutral but not robotic, classic synthetic voice after post-processing). * [Here are the characters in motion with mocap (WIP)](https://sz-portfolio.my.canva.site/va-audition) The female is the lieutenant of the ship; brave, determined but also warm and caring. The male assumes the captain role; steadfast, bold and a born leader but not quite himself in this cinematic. Likely PayPal as we are in the EU but open to other feasible options. Happy to clear things up if there are questions. I'm looking forward to hearing your voices! Thank you ?

I know its difficult to get into the industry, but ive contacted my local talent agencies, and a slew of other sites( reddit wont let me name them) just for the chance to land anything at this point. I'm not particularly at my wits end or overtly frustrated, I just would like to see if theres something more I could do. I'm trying to evolve and become a better actor through writing diverse characters and stories, all while maintaining something believable and genuine. I would greatly appreciate any feedback y'all could give to point me in the right direction for something memorable, believable, etc. Thanks in advance!

Unpaid non-union feature ghosted me on shoot day, now re-offering with travel required

Unpaid non-union feature ghosted me on shoot day, now re-offering with travel required

Posted on Aug 14th

Hey everyone, looking for some perspective from fellow actors here. I currently have 3 credits on my resume and recently submitted for a non-union indie feature and I was offered a Day Player role. Here is the list of events: July 29: Offered the role for an Aug 2 local shoot 25 minute drive. I accepted, asked for sides, and asked if reel footage would be provided. July 30: Confirmed my availability and got the sides. Aug 2 (8:01 AM - Call Time): Still no call sheet or sides. I messaged them at call time asking if it was canceled. Aug 6: 4 days later they replied: "No, we had to make adjustments to dates and casting." Aug 10: Received a bulk email offering the role again, now 2–3 days unpaid, actors pay all travel (Indiana/Wisconsin), meals "when available," and footage "when possible." Since I only have 3 credits, I have a bit of fomo rn and idk what would be best for me. On one hand if it's Wisconsin it'll be about 2.5 hrs vs Indiana would be about an hr give or take potentially more tho, but getting ghosted on the original shoot date felt like a massive red flag. Any suggestions from people who also dealt with these type of situation?

I’m 20 and a Lead in a tubi mini series, but im disappointed.

Posted on Aug 14th

So for the last year I’ve been working on a mini series and I was SO excited to get the lead for it, and don’t get me wrong I am still excited and grateful. I’ve had an absolute blast, but I fear the main character (me) is written so…uninteresting? Now I feel I play him well, I hit all my emotional beats and what not but…I don’t ever do anything? Other characters have such interesting stuff to do, fun scenes and scenes that are intense. But the story kinda just happens to my character, im being told im an amazing actor all the time by the people im working with but I fear with how the story plays I wont look very good in it. I feel the writing for me is so boring that Im being upstaged by my other co Star because of our characters dynamic, he will speak over my lines because he has such a hard time remembering lines I will have to feed him lines all the time. So in every scene I am being smothered by him repeatedly saying his lines and saying it’s a “character trait” for example one of our scenes were nominated for an award. And in tht scene i am crying my eyes out, snot coming out of my nose and its an amazing scene, my other co star is screaming and yelling in my face, beating me while I preform slight stunts which makes his character look so cool. The whole scene is amazing and I loved both our performances. I wasn’t nominated for a single thing but he was. And claims he was the lead actor. Now he keeps bragging about it and saying how he is the lead of the show. I feel stupid for venting about this and I swear im not a person who is full of himself or vein, im young im 20 and this is my biggest role so i take a lot of pride in my work. I go above and beyond on set and behind the scenes and fear by the end of this I won’t have much footage to even use out of all the episodes. All this and I haven’t even mention the god awful disorganized system that this project has, some days im memorizing two plus pages on set five mins before filming because the director added new stuff and forgot to tell anyone.

Repped Actors, what worked for you? Seeking constructive criticism!

I'd love some constructive criticism on my email to agencies to obtain representation. I'm not a new actor but I don't have any guest or co-star credits. This message was crafted and refined after a friend of mine who is repped provided some pointers for things that worked for her (style/tone of message, adding emojis in the subject line for visibility, etc) Please be kind in your responses, its hard enough to be in this industry as it is. I've changed my name, removed the hyperlinks to my reels, and in my email I embedded my headshots that aren't shown here. Thank you! \------- Hi there!  I'm Jimothy Sinclair, and I would love the opportunity to partner with \[Name of Agency\]! As a SAG-Eligible actress and stuntwoman in Los Angeles, I am excited about leveling up my journey in film and television while contributing to the continued success of your team. My passion lies in blending stunts with comedy—I absolutely live for farce, thriving in dramatic, eccentric roles that embrace chaos and danger. Think Drew Barrymore's Sheila Hammond in 'Santa Clarita Diet' mixed with a touch of Katherine O'Hara's Moira Rose in 'Schitt's Creek,' heightened with the tactical combat skills of Ana de Armas' Eve in 'Ballerina.' In other words, I have a knack for making bad decisions look good on screen or stage.  *Just a short while ago, my cohorts and I completed our entry for the 48 Hour Film Festival, "NSFW", a film written, performed, and edited* ***ENTIRELY*** *by stunt professionals.  I can't wait to see it and the other entries on August 15th--* [*join me there!*](https://ab-aut.ticketbud.com/la48hfp2026) With specialized stunt training rooted in over a decade of dedicated martial arts practice as a 1st-degree black belt in Goju-ryu karate, I know my skills and vibe would be an asset to your firm.  As a certified phlebotomist with real clinical experience, I'm also a sensible fit for  technical medical dialogue in procedurals like 'The Pitt' and 'Grey's Anatomy.'  Click the links below to see my reels! I'm from South Jersey and I was wondering if there's any way for me to get into a queer romance movie, here is a photo of me and my boyfriend. I think that there needs to be more representation and I would love to be part of something amazing. I grew up hiding who I was and I still feel awkward sometimes in public when it comes to what if people target us at times, but who cares, haters gonna hate. Let me live my romance, they can live their own lives. I've seen film series like Hearstopper and Young Royals and felt seen, and I'd like others to feel seen too.

Self tape and deadlines questions

Self tape and deadlines questions

Posted on Aug 14th

Hey all, I just signed with a new agent and they sent me my first self tape audition w/ them. They sent it through email and not through Actors Access or Casting workbook which where I used to receive my auditions from old rep and upload my tape myself so my rep can see them before sending to casting. Is the way I received my audition with new rep normal? Additionally - they included a deadline and I emailed them the tape through wetransfer. It’s past the deadline and they haven’t downloaded the self tape. So I’m a bit worried whether casting will still receive it. I also don’t want to micro manage my agent because I do trust them. So my questions really are - is it normal to receive auditions through email and not through the databases and if it’s also normal for agents to give you a deadline and then not acknowledge or sent a note if received? Lastly, how do you sent your reps your tapes? Noting that I’m in based in Toronto and my agent is based in Vancouver but submits to all to CDs. Thank you in advance.
