Theme Park Jobs: Good Career Moves?

I have recently auditioned and been placed on the "Final Consideration List" for a theme park performer job in Japan. While it is a nice gig with good pay, my career goals are focused on being a film actor and a 13 month contract in Japan would seem to put that on hold. Would this be a legitimate step forward or would this gig just stall my career development? Thanks for your help.

This Post Isn’t Meant for Filmmakers. It's Meant for Actors.

Posted on Sep 1st

If you’re a “filmmaker”, stop reading this. It’s not meant for you.If you’re an actor, let’s wax lyrical about getting paid for your work. While I am a writer, producer and director, I was & am an actor 1st.As an actor, you yourself may have studied your craft and have amassed a sea of dept. You may have done theater; sacrificing your valuable time for months at a time to be a part of something that only a theater actor can fully appreciate. You may have acted in short films, feature films, teasers, trailers, pilots and webisodes. As an actor you may have put years in to working on your craft. Why do you keep acting for free?(Please allow me to clarify a point. Short films, feature films, teasers, trailers, pilots and webisodes should pay you. At the very least, they should offer deferments, so that if & when the filmmakers make money, the actors will make money. The only projects that should not have to pay their actors are student films and film challenges.)You probably keep acting for free because “filmmakers” aren’t paying.“Crafty, credit, drinks.” “You will be well fed.” “Professional set.” “Fun people to work with.” “Networking opportunities.” “Considered for future work.”None of that pays the bills! It’s preposterous for “filmmakers” to pretend that those are incentives to audition for them. It is disrespectful! They’re supposed to offer that on their shoots!Yes, I understand & appreciate the argument that actors have to first build up a resume. However, at what point should you get paid? For me, and on my projects, if an actor with no resume has the "look" and the ability to pull off the role, they should be paid! Often times, it’s not necessarily their resume that earns an actor their role. It’s their look and their abilities, but that's another post.Whether or not they are a good person with a great energy also factors in on the casting, but that’s another post as well.Fellow actors, let’s look at the power we posses. What if you stopped acting for free? What if all of your actor friends stopped acting for free? What if every actor stopped working for free? “Filmmakers” would have to start paying you.How would “filmmakers” get money to pay you? They’d have to secure funding for their projects. How would “filmmakers” secure funding? They’d have to approach investors or stage crowd-sourcing campaigns. They would have to write and/or find great screenplays that would attract investors and/or crowd-sourcing campaign donors. But really, that’s none of your concern. That’s the “filmmakers” job. Some might ask, "isn’t that what a producer does?" Well, isn’t that what a “filmmaker” is?Somewhere along the line, compensating the cast fell out of the job description of a “filmmaker”, and that is disgusting. It is unacceptable. It's disrespectful.“Filmmakers” figure all costs in to their budgets. They should add the cost of paying you. You are bringing your skill set and your abilities to do the job you’ve been hired to do, just like everybody else on  set. This article isn’t meant for filmmakers. It is meant for actors. It is meant to get us thinking and talking about the powers that we posses. We can have a domino effect in getting paid. We deserve to be rightfully compensated. We are to be treated with respect.I hope you all are well!If this post resonates with you, please share it on social media.Respectfully, Marcelo Dietrichhttps://twitter.com/MarceloDietrich

How To Fulfill my Passion

How To Fulfill my Passion

Posted on Aug 22nd

If you had told me about 7 years ago that I would love to act, I'd laugh at you. I'd done a couple of plays when I was younger (ensemble roles, nothing major) and figured that the writing side was more my thing. But then, I got the opportunity to audition for a web series. While the project fell through, I still spent hours upon hours trying to figure out how to best play the role I'd been cast in. The project fell through, and for a while, I buried the love I had for acting (and to an extent screenwriting) and focused more on my novels and online content. But the itch has returned and now I want to do more acting, more screenwriting, and I find myself unsure as to how to do it.

Are day player principal or glorified extras ?

Posted on Aug 9th

OK. I am not the person to have bad experiences, but this one takes the cake.I wanted to shy away from  background / extra  acting  and want to do full principal work . I have had alot of principal work that was fantastic , but this one  gig had a bad taste in my mouth.I went on backstage to try out some day player roles. I found a role that I thought fit me perfectly and signed up for it . The director emails me. He had given me a completely different role. Very small , but it was a speaking role so I did not complain . When I got onto set, I was called an extra by everyone. The crew was nice , but the SAG actors that were there were pretty rude and not even funny .  I really wanted to just walk off of set at that point , but that would be very unprofessional so I sat it out. Felt like I wasting my time. This in terms really turned me off on doing day player roles and just try and do support / lead roles.  when I sign upon backstage. There was a supporting role that lasted for one day, but I feel its going to be another 180 and I will be an extra again . It is very annoying. So what is your experience and opinion on day player roles ?  ( sorry for bad grammar. I am not a great writer by all means XD).

I'm an Exec Producer of a low budget movie that will shoot in Atlanta in a few weeks.  This low budget model is not my area of expertise, as I'm based in LA, and most of the budgets I've worked in are much higher.  I was awestruck when the Atlanta producers told me the casting director received approx 3000 submissions for this low budget movie.  The casting director and the Atlanta filmmakers pulled selects for the group to review.  When I started reviewing the audition videos, I was so impressed and delighted by the actors who had given us their time.  Honestly, I was blown away that there are so many talented actors out there.  And I applaud the casting director who selected great new talent to read.  While some of the selected auditions were SAG, others were non-union or SAG Eligible.  Casting directors are looking for great talent.  They will push that new talent up to the top alongside more established, union talent.  The odds might be long, and the dedication required is intimidating, but you will be seen if you keep at it.  Break a leg!!
