I posted here because I feel like there are some issues with my line deliveries, not just in this particular monologue, but in general. Something always feels off, even when I just do a monologue without recording. Any feedback would be appreciated.
I need to incorporate music study and PRACTICE. I already do a lot of dance and am gonna add solo dance styles. but how do you organize you day and get singing practice and lessons and maybe songwriting and DAW and instrument practice in?
Hiya! New-ish voice actor here, I really want to do more masculine roles but I am truly struggling with sounding masculine. I have a really low voice range for an AFAB person I believe, so it's not like I struggle with hitting low notes. I just...sound like a woman hitting said low notes. On some of my lowest notes I do sound masculine but I'm unsure how to recreate that consistently. I would love to be able to sound masculine whilst in my normal range rather than only when I'm speaking in a really low pitch, but all of the tutorials I've seen online I might be misunderstanding, since they've only helped improve my vocal range, rather than *actually* sound masculine. I feel so close and yet so far! Any help or pointing to easy-to-understand guides would be helpful. Or just plain text...I feel like I may be misunderstanding video guides because English is not my first language so sometimes it's difficult to parse what is being conveyed in certain sentences (especially when the creator uses different terms for the same thing interchangeably, I don't know why it messes with my head so much)
Hello! First of all, I want to make it clear that I have zero experience in acting and that I’ve never taken an acting class. I was wondering how actors in big movies, like John Wick, make it look as though they’ve been using weapons such as swords and guns their entire lives, even though, in reality, they may have only trained with them for a few months. They also manage to perform with so much emotion and confidence. I’m a martial artist, and I perform with a sword, but all of my routines look quite unemotional. Yes, I shout and do all of that, but it doesn’t look like an actual fight. I don’t have that same confidence and intensity that actors have, and that’s a really important part of my sport. Do you have any acting tips that could help me improve my performance and make it look like I’m genuinely in “fight mode”?

I’m 23 and basically starting from zero when it comes to acting. Hey everyone, looking for some perspective from fellow actors here. I currently have 3 credits on my resume and recently submitted for a non-union indie feature and I was offered a Day Player role. Here is the list of events: July 29: Offered the role for an Aug 2 local shoot 25 minute drive. I accepted, asked for sides, and asked if reel footage would be provided. July 30: Confirmed my availability and got the sides. Aug 2 (8:01 AM - Call Time): Still no call sheet or sides. I messaged them at call time asking if it was canceled. Aug 6: 4 days later they replied: "No, we had to make adjustments to dates and casting." Aug 10: Received a bulk email offering the role again, now 2–3 days unpaid, actors pay all travel (Indiana/Wisconsin), meals "when available," and footage "when possible." Since I only have 3 credits, I have a bit of fomo rn and idk what would be best for me. On one hand if it's Wisconsin it'll be about 2.5 hrs vs Indiana would be about an hr give or take potentially more tho, but getting ghosted on the original shoot date felt like a massive red flag. Any suggestions from people who also dealt with these type of situation?
So for the last year I’ve been working on a mini series and I was SO excited to get the lead for it, and don’t get me wrong I am still excited and grateful. I’ve had an absolute blast, but I fear the main character (me) is written so…uninteresting? Now I feel I play him well, I hit all my emotional beats and what not but…I don’t ever do anything? Other characters have such interesting stuff to do, fun scenes and scenes that are intense. But the story kinda just happens to my character, im being told im an amazing actor all the time by the people im working with but I fear with how the story plays I wont look very good in it. I feel the writing for me is so boring that Im being upstaged by my other co Star because of our characters dynamic, he will speak over my lines because he has such a hard time remembering lines I will have to feed him lines all the time. So in every scene I am being smothered by him repeatedly saying his lines and saying it’s a “character trait” for example one of our scenes were nominated for an award. And in tht scene i am crying my eyes out, snot coming out of my nose and its an amazing scene, my other co star is screaming and yelling in my face, beating me while I preform slight stunts which makes his character look so cool. The whole scene is amazing and I loved both our performances. I wasn’t nominated for a single thing but he was. And claims he was the lead actor. Now he keeps bragging about it and saying how he is the lead of the show. I feel stupid for venting about this and I swear im not a person who is full of himself or vein, im young im 20 and this is my biggest role so i take a lot of pride in my work. I go above and beyond on set and behind the scenes and fear by the end of this I won’t have much footage to even use out of all the episodes. All this and I haven’t even mention the god awful disorganized system that this project has, some days im memorizing two plus pages on set five mins before filming because the director added new stuff and forgot to tell anyone.

Hey all, I just signed with a new agent and they sent me my first self tape audition w/ them. They sent it through email and not through Actors Access or Casting workbook which where I used to receive my auditions from old rep and upload my tape myself so my rep can see them before sending to casting. Is the way I received my audition with new rep normal? Additionally - they included a deadline and I emailed them the tape through wetransfer. It’s past the deadline and they haven’t downloaded the self tape. So I’m a bit worried whether casting will still receive it. I also don’t want to micro manage my agent because I do trust them. So my questions really are - is it normal to receive auditions through email and not through the databases and if it’s also normal for agents to give you a deadline and then not acknowledge or sent a note if received? Lastly, how do you sent your reps your tapes? Noting that I’m in based in Toronto and my agent is based in Vancouver but submits to all to CDs. Thank you in advance.

I’m a new ACTRA performer trying to understand the actual industry practice around “local hire.” I recently spoke with ACTRA Toronto and was told that there are IPA provisions for Toronto-area performers working beyond a certain radius that can provide for transportation, accommodation and per diem. I’m not sure whether other ACTRA branches have equivalent provisions (I was told Montreal does, and I’m curious about other cities and what the norm is). The complication is that many casting calls specify a particular city as “local hire,” and it isn’t always clear whether that is a preference or a requirement. I understand the tax implications - more so I’m trying to understand how flexible production can be about housing/transportation for non-local performers, particularly when the production is in the same province. ACTRA advised me not to claim local hire if accepting the job would mean personally absorbing substantial travel and accommodation costs, since that can undermine the purpose of the provisions. I’m trying to understand the reality: if an actor indicates local hire (because it is preferred and/or they feel pressure) and is offered the role, but circumstances change and the out-of-pocket costs are no longer financially feasible, can a rep negotiate accommodation, transportation or per diem with production? Will this burn bridges? Or does indicating local hire mean the actor is expected to cover those costs regardless? How do actors and reps handle this in practice? I'd appreciate any insight.
Hey guys, I was recently at my local gym and when walking out I was approached by a casting director for Love Island. I’ve been in LA for 3 years and have good credits and a manager (I’m SAG). I haven’t booked anything in 6 months and have been pretty much just working my butt off at my job. Anyways I told them I would be fine with it, just to possibly build a connection as connections are everything. Any thoughts on how to approach the situation?
I've looked at a couple of agencies but I feel like internet searches can only do so much for me. I need some human suggestions! I have been doing voice acting in my home for 6+ years now. Built-in home studio. I have done plenty of private works and have booked movies, video games, audio books, and other media forms. I finally quit my part time job back in June to begin doing voice work full time because its exactly what I want to do with my life. So far I have been doing well for myself but I am ready to get in deeper and have access to auditions I would not have had before. So here is what I am asking... TLDR: For those of you who have been applying, once were with an agency, and/or are with 1 or more agencies, what agencies have been the best experience for you? Also, what do you feel or what were you told got you chosen with your agency(ies)? If you think there is something I am missing or not understanding about the process, do tell! I may be use to the work but I am not use to the agency part. Thank you all for any help! Start with the right material. Choose a monologue that runs one to two minutes and comes from a piece where your character is actively trying to change, persuade, or influence someone, not simply narrate a story. Read the full script if available, so you understand the world, the relationship you're speaking into, and what your character stands to gain or lose. Pick a role that sits close to your natural age, type, and essence. The closer it is to you, the more grounded and truthful your performance will feel.Get your setup right before you hit record. Film horizontally, framed from roughly the chest or waist up unless you've been asked for something else. Light yourself with soft, natural light facing you, a window in front of you works well, and record in a quiet room free of background noise and harsh shadows. Keep your eyeline just off the lens rather than staring directly into it, unless the audition specifically directs otherwise. Memorize your lines early so the words are second nature and you're free to focus on the acting.Finally, treat the monologue as a real conversation. Even though you're alone, there's someone on the other end of those words, so listen, react, and leave space for them instead of pushing through at one flat emotional level. Warm up your body and voice to shake off tension before you start, then record several takes and watch them back. Reviewing your own footage lets you check your framing, volume, and emotional range, and tighten everything before you submit.We'd love to hear from you: how do you prepare a monologue for an on-camera audition? Hey guys, I recently had been self submitting on Actors Access for various projects and I received an audition request for one that I was super excited about. Shortly after a relative passed and I was not even thinking about anything else and missed the deadline. The role has some specific requirements that I fit and I think I would be a great fit for it. I wasn't able to leave a note to decline since the deadline passed. However, this is a smaller project with the CD covering various roles and I see their website and email online. Do you all think it would be appropriate if I reached out and sent over my audition that way? Not sure what the best practice is here and it's a unique situation. At minimum I wouldnt want them to not request from me in the future seeing I missed this.

I am aware that one of the clips features shots of another actor which is discouraged in a reel, however, as I said, I have limited clips so I figured using what I have now in order to book more work to get more clips is better than nothing. To help frame your feedback, I would appreciate specific input on the following (however, still open to general impressions): \- Order of clips— how does the order flow? Hi, I originally asked this on the directing subreddit, but I was wondering, as actors, what do you think could improve film rehearsals? I’ve recently been listening to and reading a lot of interviews with theatre actors. They all seem to love the rehearsal process for theatre which lasts two months and allows them to explore their character. Meanwhile they all seem to hate film, where they basically get one read-through and a block-through before being rushed in-front of a camera. I was just wondering if anyone has any thoughts or found a good way of rehearsing for film and tv. I imagine there must be some middle ground since film actors don’t need to be off-book on the same way.
I have a semi alternative appearance and I sometimes change my look in different ways(removing or adding piercings, slightly different hair, etc.). Nothing drastic, I don’t even dye my hair anymore so that I can keep a more consistent look, and I was told by my agent minor changes are fine as long as a similar vibe is there, and auditions haven’t been a problem so far. But what is the limit? Because I’m scared now that I maybe went too far with a change because I impulsively bleached my eyebrows last night and since it’s a big feature on my face that it will turn off casting. I don’t plan to keep them long though, just until it grows back to my natural eyebrow color. Would this be a problem? Would I need new headshots for each and every little change if I already have a certain look and they generally know what to expect? If it’s a problem I’m glad to change it back but I’m just nervous about it. I asked my agent too many questions and I feel annoying as a newbie so I’m posting here. Helppp.

Hello all, I’ll keep it short and straightforward. There’s a director that I met and would love to work with, he has a couple of features on his name but he’s quite indie and tackling themes and ideas that I resonate with. We’ve already spoken and told each other we’ll work together one day. Right now he’s editing one of his features and has another planned for the future. I write fiction prose and he has said he likes my writing, so he told me he would be down to work on a script together with me in which I can also act. He told me I should send him some of my ideas and we’ll see from there, keeping in mind that he’s super busy this year and it’ll probably have to be a project on “low fuel.” While I love this idea of acting in a script that I write myself, it just sounds a bit wrong. We live in Europe so there’s a strong “auteur” sentiment, especially here in France. I don’t want to take his vision away, or his credit, nor do I want to seem self centered by writing myself into a film. I also don’t want to be too involved by accident, in the sense that I wouldn’t want to wake up one day being asked to go over the shotlist together, for example. I’m not sure how to feel about all of this especially because I’ve never been in a feature before and I’ve only acted in a few short films, so I’m still a newbie. But I do believe me and him are on the same wavelength and could create something good together, and I love writing anyway. I’m also interested in becoming a producer and studying toward that, so I would essentially not mind dealing with other departments, but I’m afraid there will be way too much work for someone who’s just supposed to act.

I’ve been reading for a large number of movie of the week and lifetime/Hallmark films recently and I have a good feeling about recent submissions. What can I expect if cast? For example, what are shoot day schedules like, and how long is the shooting schedule typically? Is it a week or just a few days? etc. These opportunities are local hire just outside of where I live but I’ve heard that the producers will occasionally provide transportation and house actors if they are all coming from the same nearby city. How often is that the case? And is that something my rep can negotiate if I get cast? In terms of memorization and output, are the larger scenes already typically in the auditions, and if not, what can you expect in terms of draft material and memorization expectations? How ahead of time would you get the script and are there a lot of new drafts when you’re already on set or does it typically execute seamlessly? Are there also usually chemistry reads leading up to final casting or are lifetime and MOW etc booked off tape? Is there anything else I should know to be prepared in case of cast. Acknowledging these are a lot of questions!! If you happen to have an answer to any of this and feel like sharing, or have additional advice to add, that would be great- thank you.

Hey all, voice acting has been a dream of mine, and since some free time has come into my hands, and after a convention visit, I signed up for this thing called the voice actor college program. After waiting a week to access the second course, I've seen some things that have concerned me. If you have any previous interactions or history with "The Voice Actor College" I would love to hear what you think. I think it's a little odd I haven't seen much discussion around the program itself, so if there's any \*real\* people that can weigh in, I would be so thankful! First off, this is the first program I have ever used regarding voice acting, I will be waiting for the third program which will open up in exactly 6 days as of writing. I'm not sure if this is what other programs usually do, so like I said, I haven't actually used anything else for voice acting. The cons(?)/The things that concerned me: I would check out the blog section, and there would be some pictures sprinkled throughout. I noticed that some of these were AI generated, and it got me thinking: if they're going to ai generate images, what's stopping them from ai generating some kind of script for the course itself? Before a course starts, I've only seen two people. A woman introducing the course, a second one featuring the same one telling me what would come up next, and for the anime voicing portion, apparently "Josh" (The same Josh Martin who is a voice actor for funimation) made a video to introduce me to the anime portion. For some reason I just opened the video on youtube instead of the mini player, and at full quality, I realize the plant in the background has the design of the leaf changing throughout the video. I realize "Josh" isn't blinking and actually sounds kind of odd? Same thing with the other lady, no blinking. I'm not familiar with Josh Martin's work, but I was still put off. The original videos I mentioned with the intro woman had some moles on her arm, but they seemed to fade in and out at times. Were these even real people? I look up who wrote the blogs from earlier, and these 'people' just seem really suspicious to me. As someone who really wants to get into voice acting properly, I'm once again, reaching out to see if anyone else has used this program before and to give me some insight regarding their experience. Is this just an AI slopping money sink? Or is there actually some value here that can get me introduced to the voice acting world? If you have any tips, recommendations, advice, anything, please please tell me. At the moment, I'm not very far, so I can't really say I have learned a lot so far, as this course is supposed to be a year's long worth of information. There was a recent up charge in payment plans, so I'm still paying the $24 for my current plan. If I were to cancel and pick it up later, I would pay the up charge. They already took my money for this month, but as I'm seeing a little more, I just want to again, make sure this is worth my money. I'm very tired as of writing, I may have glazed over some things I've seen, but the worst has been mentioned. I’ve reached a place in my career where I feel that I have solid credits on my resume, and am ready to be taken seriously by agents. I’ve got my BFA, a reel, credits at regional theaters, and some downtown NYC credits. All of these things I have achieved through networking and self submission. There are also some film and TV credits, but it is a much smaller list than the theatre ones. I have had a few meetings with agents, but none have gone well. I get the feeling that the theater credits, and especially experience with Shakespeare is a bit of a turn-off to these professionals because they assume you will then become a client who will frequently be unavailable for valuable months. I love theater, but for creative / financial reasons I’d love to shift my focus more onto the screen. I’m at a place where I’d like to be considered for higher profile auditions, but don’t see how that is possible without one of these agencies that don’t see the theatre work as attractive experience. Any advice on how I could better position my materials to attract these companies, or how I should be conducting myself in an interview the next time I have one?

Hi there! I’m a semi-professional actor and stage manager, and have gotten my degree in theatre. I’ve been able to get steady consistent work with live theatre, and I understand that the skills will always be slightly different, but I was curious on if casting agencies will consider traditional theatre and acting training/degrees. I’ve done light voice work when I was a teenager years ago now, but now that I’m in my 20s I’d like to work within the field again. I’ve always had a passion for voice work and it was one of those dreams I had as a kid. Essentially, I have enough connections and experience that I don’t have trouble finding regional work as an actor or stage-manager, I’ve even directed a few professional projects before, but wanted to know if these skills are looked upon favorably in this field as well.
Hi! I am totally new to acting and I've just had my fourth Meisner class (I'm not trying to become an actor, but trying to explore new things). So far I've only done the repetition exercise, which has been really interesting and challenging in a good way! Yesterday it got surprisingly intense. My partner said some insightful things ("you're hiding," "you're carrying a lot of pressure") that hit me deeply and I fully broke down and started crying (I cry very rarely, so there's that). Continuing on, I felt like it got messy and exposed the complicated feelings I have towards conflict and vulnerability and how I see myself. And I think that complexity really confused him, leading him to say, "You're weird." (This is fine, I'm not hurt at all, I agree.) At the time, the connection and emotions made me feel a kind of high, and now the next day I am wracked with embarrassment. I think my partner and I were both sort of reeling from the interaction. And I feel like somehow my fucked-upness hijacked/derailed the experience. So, I guess what I am asking is: is this a normal Meisner experience? A messy, complicated, emotional time and an ensuing vulnerability hangover? Or like, am I right to be embarrassed and never go back to class again? ? Thanks in advance for any feedback!! ?
Hello! I’ve been a stay at home mom now for about 8 years and IN IT. Neurodivergent kids, running the PTA, driving a minivan in the suburbs… not a ton of mental space for myself or any of my own goals… but I’ve been having the itch to get back to acting professionally… So this year I started self submitting more and with my commercial rep I booked a national commercial- my first time on set since I was pregnant! Then I booked a short play festival- my first time on stage in 10 years! I got new headshots this summer and did an agent mailing with Repunzel and had a meeting 2 hours later, signed 2 days after that. The following week had my first TV audition through the agent, since motherhood, and yesterday I found out I booked it! ? After years being SAG eligible I just joined. I turned 40 last week too, it’s really just been a whirlwind. I’m absolutely shocked by all of this, and though I know things are very different with the industry and I’m keeping my goals small, I’m feeling excited! Motherhood is truly the most transformative, wonderful, challenging experience and to feel like maybe I’ve still got it has been hugely uplifting. I honestly think I’m a better actor and human after this break away from the industry. So anyways, I don’t mean this all as a brag but hopefully as encouragement, especially for other moms out there who maybe are in the endless days of diapers and tantrums and snacks. The myth of having it all is a myth, but as the seasons change so does your capacity, and your goals. I know it’s super possible I don’t book again for a while but trying to enjoy the ride as it comes. ?

My child had a commercial callback today for something she never taped for. It was to be one of 2 kids. I’m assuming they liked the “parents” tapes and had to go back to the submissions to find a match. Curious if anyone knows how many actors are brought in for commercial callbacks typically. I know these “parents” were also auditioned with 2 other kids. But I don’t know if any other family combos came in after. This was her first in person audition in years.
I see on actors access a breakdown for a SAG film by a filmmaker i would love to work with, but they make it very clear they are looking for local hires and will not be flying people in from other states or nyc (where I live). They are looking for people within a 1 hour drive of the town, which is in upstate New York. So my question is - if I’m cool with going up there and paying my own way (train ticket, uber , hotel), is there any reason to not submit? Can I say I split time between Hudson valley and NYC? I know local hire is sometimes a tax thing, but this is still ny state. My main hesitation is submitting/auditioning/getting cast and then they have to verify my address and I can’t and then I get dropped and that CD hates me. For additional context, this is a small town which is 25 min drive away from a somewhat popular larger town. So it wouldn’t be crazy to just go to this town for a weekend on my own dime. Thoughts ? My desire to do it is cuz it would probably be less competitive to book, seems like a sizable part which could really help my reel and resume and would be very cool to work with him. And I think the pay would still have me end with money even if I had to pay for a hotel for a few days. Im also SAG-E so I'm not sure if that complicates this?
