There are many different character types: leading lady, leading man, girl next door,
athlete, mother, etc. These "types" are the character descriptions that casting
directors will use to describe the type of character they need, usually in the form of
adjectives. Character types aren't limited to adjectives. They can also include an age
range. Character types could be what you look like physically, your personality, or a
combination of both.
Knowing Your Type: There might be a huge difference between what you think
your type is and what everyone else thinks your type is. If you're unsure which
character type you fall into, it might be a good idea to get some feedback from actor
friends, acting coaches/teachers, directors, or producers. Ask them which kinds of
roles they see you playing. Be open to new character type suggestions. The way the
majority perceives you will probably be how casting directors, directors, and
producers see you. Knowing your character type is a huge asset. Your ability to play
your type will increase your chances of booking roles.
Melissa McCarthy started her career as a supporting character, but she has grown
into a leading lady. If you're honest with your specific character type (and own it
like she does) you'll have a greater chance at success.
It is useful to look up celebrity actors that have a similar look and personality as you
do and research what character types they have played and currently play.
Now that you've determined your character type, it's only a matter of time before a
casting director, director, or producer will find the right role for you, so be patient.
