I'm 26 years old and just started my acting journey. I plan to go to drama school soon. By the time I graduate I'll be 30. I'm not sure how many years after that it'll take to get a big break. Or if I'll even get roles. As a WOC I'm also at a big disadvantage. Hollywood doesn't look upon older women kindly and since I'll start my career properly only in my 30s, it's even worse. I'm so scared of aging and how I'll be perceived due to it. I'm considering not going into acting all together. I know many people get their big break in their 40s, but they started in their teens and 20s too. They spent years building up that foundation. I'm already so behind. It's only recently the tides have been turning for actresses and even then, progress is SLOW. What kind of roles wilI be playing 20 or 30 years from now? Will I even be in the industry still? What's my place as an aging actor? If I started earlier, I wouldn't give any of these things much thought but for my age, I should be much further along.

I never really got into acting because every time I tried it was in front of hundreds of people being put in the spotlight. I realized that in VA that all of that spotlight is taken off of me, my face and physical features. I just want to ask… to all the voice actors out there, is it fun? do you believe its worth it?
Hello! I’m a 27 year old actress and moved away from New Jersey in order to pursue acting in LA. However, I just don’t love it. The community doesn’t feel strong, the culture is so different from the east coast, and I’m so far from my family. I’ve done a couple gigs and love my acting class, but find that I’ve been so unhappy since I’ve gotten here that I don’t have much motivation. Other factors: \-I am currently on workers comp from an injury, and am running out of money. I will have to find a new job soon, and finding jobs here is next to impossible. I feel like I’m broke, unhappy, and far from my family, and it’s just not worth it anymore. BUT of course I have doubts and “what ifs” and a million different voice in my head saying the same thing. Any advice would help!!!

Hey guys ! I’m 21 and I’ve always been passionate about acting but it’s not something that I’ve pursued until now. I’ve been doing a lot of research in regard to different acting schools etc. I know that a lot of actors tend to get their breakthroughs later on in life while having prior acting experience. I know that acting has no age limits and you can always learn, however my concern is that there are people my age that have prior acting experience while I on other hand do not. My question is, am I still capable of becoming a successful actress regardless of the age that I’m starting to learn at ?

Hi, all. I searched the site for similar posts so I hope this is not redundant. I am trying to get into acting and am working on building my profiles on Actors Access and Casting Networks. The problem is, all my experience - which does include a documentary on Amazon Prime - is over 10 years old and some is even close to 20 years old. So obviously not what I want to put on a resume. I am starting an acting class in September and I've seen on other posts that I should include that. I'm just wondering what I can do so my resume isn't essentially blank. I would like to audition for some theater roles, however, living in Chicago, I'm finding it difficult to find roles that aren't also needing some history of experience/a resume. Any advice would be very helpful, and not just limited to resumes! Headshots, demo reels, monologues, etc. TIA!

I'm torn between four offers: DBA Talent Advanced Management Entertainment Lab Mattie Management Summit Pictures and Management To preface most of these agencies are looking at me as a development client, like they really want to build me into something because I have virtually no credits. Has anyone ever held themselves back from getting into acting because of a fear of publicity? Since I was a kid, I've always loved acting, and the art behind filmmaking has always interested me, but I have also always had OCD. Part of this gives me the worst intrusive thoughts. One being that I am a terrible person and if I were to ever be famous, the world would shred me apart, which is weird, since the only problematic thing I have ever really done is probably be mean to a friend once by accident in high school, which was probably around 4 years ago. I get scared because I'm not perfect, I have made mistakes and will make mistakes in the future. I am totally content with that fact as everyone is human! Everyone is able to change, atone or forgive; however, I swear actors are not seen as human. What if the public uses any small mistake to their advantage? When I see how many people make up things about actors, or even just the smallest thing, such as not smiling at a fan on the street, makes them problematic, it honestly puts me off. (Which is frustrating because there are plenty of celebrities high and low tier who genuinely are problematic and still have traction.) I am interested to know if anyone has ever struggled with this idea or thought at all and still continued to pursue their dream? (I'm new to this subreddit, and I have read through all the FAQ and Rules, and I am pretty sure this does not breach any of them!! I apologise if it has/please remove.)
hi! i’ve always wanted to do something in the film industry and ive been in a couple school productions. i’ve also taken acting/media production related classes in highschool. im a current college freshman at a cc and i’ve always planned to transfer. i planned on pursuing a media production major in texas, but after i didnt get in i decided i would just do a community college (it was too late to change my mind cause i was on the waitlist). im kinda debating on changing my major to film, but i feel that media production allows me to dip my toe into each pool. i’ve taken acting classes but i’m taking more and getting more into commercials. i currently live in the pnw so thats all there really is. however, ive been doing some research and im having a hard time figuring out where i should base myself in the near future. ik that im probably not going to live there forever, but while in college i want to utilize BEING in college. i simply just want to build experience and be able to do everything i’ve always loved doing. if i get a big role then so be it, but im mainly focused on gaining experience so i can really achieve what im working to accomplish. i wont have to worry about bills and ill still be able to live my life. money isnt the biggest issue because of scholarships and fasfa and i have family in all three places so im not alone. i also know all three places relatively well. the thing is i hear that atlanta is small so it’s kinda easier to get roles, but its also so small that it seems like its over saturated. i hear that chicago is mainly going back to it’s theater/comedy roots, with little camera acting and alot of the shows are ending. lastly, (the most obvious) la is extremely saturated but EVERYTHING casts there. so as a beginner actor trying to gain experience and every relevant opportunity she can get, la, atl, or chicago?
I’m a newer actor, and the package I purchased only includes five final photos, so I really want to make sure I’m choosing images that represent me well. Before the shoot, I had talked with my agent and we both agreed that we wanted the photos to demonstrate a range of characters/types. She gave me some feedback afterward about which photos stood out to her, but they all seem to communicate a fairly similar type to me, and one that reads considerably younger than my actual age. I also have to be honest I feel like I don’t look my best in some of the photos she selected, which makes me hesitant to use them as my primary headshots. Would it be reasonable to ask her what specifically stood out to her about these choices, without coming across as disrespecting her professional judgment? I don't want to second guess my agent, but I also don't want to spend this much and end up with photos that don't represent the range of roles I can play. Would love to hear how other actors would approach this.
This is just a showerthought... When watching anime and hearing japanese acting, like when a character screams before making a big attack or something... to me it sounds...fine? and organic even? but when i try to listen to english dub and i hear actors trying to make the same scream... i cant help but cringe. it sounds so weird and unnatural and feels like it just doesnt fit... I know for a fact it can not be boiled down to "japanese voice actors are better" because there is no way professional voice actors that spend their life honing the mastery are just suddenly worse in english industry for some reason. so I'm wondering, why it sounds so much worse to me? My first thought was...well, i dont speak japanese so it just sounds different to me and there is no context or something. But here is the thing... english isn't my first language either, my native is russian, so by this logic english also should sound fine and only russian should make me cringe. Like I grew up with all these brand names in english and never knew they mean something. And when I learned english I was like..."so you just ask for a shoe chocolate bar in a store?? wtf??". so...do japanese people feel similar when listening to voice acting in their native language? or does it sound fine to them? p.s. I'm not a voice actor, just thought this question fits here...sorry if its not the right place for this discussion
so I'm currently 14 and i want be an actor, and hopefully go to a really good drama sixth form or college (for a btech in acting/drama and maybe a levels in English or philosophy) but im not sure if i can make it, especially since the only acting experience i have right now is through school... im going to one workshop over summer, hopefully two, but my parents are saying i have to purely focus on my studies... im scared i won't have enough things on my cv to get into a good school, and im 5'2 and not conventionally attractive either... i was just wondering if someone who has been to a top drama college or sixth form could give advice and the types of things they had on theur cvs to get in? also advice for getting into top unis and the industry in general would be appreciated too!!
Hi everyone, I don’t have anyone to talk to about this, so any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated. I’m an American woman in my late 20s living in Tokyo, but lately I’ve really been wanting more acting opportunities, like in the U.S. or even other parts of the world. I live in Japan (going on 10 years) because life here is cheaper, safer, and it’s been a good chance to build my creative skills. Tokyo has some really cool stuff. I do acting and modeling here, and also have a normal day job. But lately things are stagnant… I am not sure if I’m ready to leave Tokyo yet, and part of me feels like it can give me a unique background as an actor if I eventually move back to LA. But jobs here in Japan are not so foreigner friendly, as you can imagine in a very homogenous country. I have been considering - Should I get an agent in the U.S., submit self-tapes from here, and fly out if I get a role? Should I keep working locally in Japan, keep building, then move back? Should I just move back now? I feel torn because I love day to day life in Japan, but I also love the abundance of auditions America has. An ideal world would be the safety and affordability of Japan with the industry of LA, but of course that is not a thing lol…I feel like I’m running out of time? Or not optimizing it well enough. I don’t know. Please let me know if you have any feedback for me, as I know it’s kind of a weird situation. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart!

I'm struck by how much the English voice actor for Rudeus's past life and inner voice, Ben Phillips, sounds like Ray Porter, the narrator of the Project Hail Mary audiobook. They really sound quite similar! Do they sound like each other?
I remember being younger and visiting a bunch of cons as a pre teen but I would notice that every once in a while a voice actor would kinda just be alone at a booth. I always worried that if I ever got invited to a con then that would be me. But for VA's that have gone through that, how was it? Were you relieved, bored? Did you just talk to the con agent next to you? Are you guys allowed to be on your phone?

Okay so this is something I always do after a game or anime. I hear a voice and I know ive heard them before then I end up on like 6 wiki tabs. So I just built a site for it. You like a character or a title, it shows who voices them in english and japanese, then you can jump to there other roles and find more games/anime. Theres also a voice path thing if you want the “wait their two voices away from this other character” version. No ads, its more of a notebook than a social network. I am curious about posting your work on social media as an actor. Do you think that when you post the work you do that it helps you get more work or do you think it helps with your branding?
Is it acceptable to contact an actor seeking work to hire them as a plus one to a wedding? Would this be considered disrespectful / harassment towards the actor?
I have a manager who I think is really solid and great. They don't want me self submitting on anything anymore. If I see something on Actors Access, Casting Networks, Backstage I need to e-mail them directly the job postings and they will give me the thumbs up or they will submit on my behalf. I think this is great!! Really shows we are working as a team. I'm conflicted because I don't want to bombard their e-mails throughout the day when stuff comes in that I see. Especially, if it's student films. They are very direct when it comes to this and want no self submissions at all. My agent isn't like this and she told me to loop her in only if I get a callback for something. Anyone else have reps similar to this?
Wasn't sure exactly the best place to post this, since while Hadestown is a musical in Broadway, my question stems from auditioning for a virtual production, which is considerably heavier on the voice acting side vs just flat out theatre. A little about myself, I'm a baritone with a bass range - what I mean is, my usable range goes from about C1/B0 up to C6 in some cases. The reason I don't cal myself a bass outright is because from about F2/E2 and below is all vocal fry since I just naturally have really strong fry. I've never done VA before, or anything cast-side of theatre (I'm always the one hiding behind a sound console), but figured I could give this a shot. I provided 4 clips in a Google Drive, they are all WIPs as the deadline for auditions is in a month. 'Hey, Little Songbird" | "Why We Build The Wall" | "How Long?" | and the ending of "Chant (Reprise)". These 4 combined capture the scope of my current abilities and where I am. My competition is not just a few other true basses, but also a VERY well-known VA actor who has over a decade of experience voicing low-timbre characters (he is by far the one I'm worried about, and since he joined in I've been contemplating even continuing). Given my competition and the month deadline, is it worth still continuing? Likewise, is there any way to improve in this timespan to better my chances to the best they can be? There's no reliable way I can find to darken my voice without it sounding either forced or fake, but I need it to be much darker to be able to compete with the competition. I recently joined an acting class and I'm trying to understand whether the instructor's teaching approach is normal/legitimate, especially for someone with absolutely no prior acting experience. The course seems more theatre-oriented, although they also offer camera acting. I've attended two sessions so far. Session 1: We did introductions, laughter/emotion exercises from level 1–10, including rolling on the floor while laughing, and an exercise where we had to "cry" at different intensities and then switch the emotion off. We also did walking/eye-contact exercises and were given an improvised funeral situation to act out with strangers, without a script or dialogue. Session 2: We did breathing exercises, some spontaneous speaking, a physical exercise where two people had to act out being on a bus using only their legs, and then had about 20 minutes to create a skit set in the Stone Age/among tribal people, using only emotions, sounds and physical acting—no dialogue. I'm a complete beginner and have never acted professionally or taken an acting course before, so I often felt lost about how I was supposed to approach these exercises. Most of the other people seemed to have some previous experience. For the 3rd session, we've been asked to rote-learn a short 4-sentence monologue and a small dialogue/conversation and come prepared to perform them. My question is: Is this a legitimate/normal way to train beginner actors, particularly for theatre? Is the instructor deliberately trying to develop spontaneity, physicality, emotional range and inhibition before teaching actual acting techniques, or is there something unusual about this approach? I'm especially interested in hearing from people who have experience with theatre or screen acting. What would you normally expect in the first few sessions of a beginner acting course?
Hi everyone! I’m a foreign actor looking to move to the US to continue my training/career. I’ve recently been looking at some MFA programs because it’s my “fastest” route since when I finish I would get a showcase with some agents/CDs + would get one extra year. I’ve been looking into USC, Yale and USD. Thinking about auditioning for the last three next year and going for USC this year around but I wanted to know if anyone had any experience with any of these. I've been signed with my agency in the Southeast (North Carolina) for 3 years and I've only gotten 3 total theatrical auditions and maybe 12 commercial auditions in this time. Booking is a numbers game, but if this is the total pot, then I feel like I have no chance to book anything. I don't know if this is normal in this area and market, or if something is just really off.
I did a (paid) job this year and now things are being posted, I'm realising it is a very very low-quality production. I'm terrified it is gonna prematurely wreck my reputation/resume as an actor, since I'm still new to the industry. The director is lovely and so are the team, I don't want to burn bridges but I simply CANNOT repost anything, it is all humiliatingly bad. Being on set was a great experience and I doubt the film will go far but while the director is excited and launching it online, I don't know how to navigate things diplomatically and professionally. What do I do??
Thought and advice on me. I am 18 now. My dream is to be an actor (it's too much but anyway ?). I am about to move to FRANCE to study there in University. I am an immigrant and of course my family expects me to get a STABLE job that can support me and them at the same time because I came from a low-income family and unstable politics . They want me to be like an engineering job like civil, software, architecture or one of engineer jobs. But I know I am not really into it but I am stuck in the middle of the line. If I choose my acting, I def know I can't support my family cuz it won't even guarantee my life to support myself. If I choose engineering, I know I will regret what I chose but I can support my mom. What y'all think and can y'all give me any advice or thought?

Do you ever catch yourself thinking... "I’m always doing scene work. I’m always working on monologues. But I just feel like I’m not getting any better. I can’t create the emotions of the character. I get stuck in my head. I can cry on cue at home, but when it’s time to do it in a performance…nothing ? It's a big headache and it’s a problem that can really crush your confidence. The problem is that acting isn't something you get better at simply because you've done a thousand scenes or monolques. I’m a Jiu-jitsu nut and I see a similar problem there. A lot of people who train jiu-jitsu love to spar. So they show up late to training, skipping the drilling and technique portion of class so they can just roll and try to “win” their rounds. They’re getting “mat time.” Which is a common phrase that gets thrown around. ‘You wanna get better- keep showing up.’ Kinda true, but It's missing a very important ingredent…. Deliberate practice. Deliberate practice is the principle of focusing on specific skills instead of just random , general activities. In Jiu- jitsu the people who actually improve fast do something different. They drill. They isolate one technique, one concept , and repeat it in isolation, away from the chaos of live sparring, until it gets better. Then they take it back into the roll and test it. Acting works the same way. Most actors mistake doing scenes as practice. They keep getting up, doing scene after scene, monologue after monologue, but they're not deliberate about improving the skills that are holding them back You’re getting experience… not expertise. Take listening. Every teacher tells you acting is listening and reacting. Almost nobody actually trains it. And here's why that's more important than it sounds — acting isn't real life. We’ve all seen it and experienced it… How you listen and respond in real life is way different than the way you listen and respond when you have a script in your hand. Listening and responding under an imaginary circumstance is a specific, learnable skill. It doesn't build itself just because you logged another scene. So here's something to think about before your next class, your next scene, your next audition... Ask yourself, "What skill - what acting element have I deliberately worked on? That’s a big difference. And that difference is where your improvement happens.
*Couples Therapy* S5 gave me an unexpected opportunity to experience television firsthand — and it left me wondering what else might be possible. Since then, I’ve been exploring unscripted television, acting, and other on-camera opportunities while trying to learn as much as I can about this industry. I’m not a trained actor. I’m a down-to-earth, hardworking guy with determination, grit, and a whole lot of life experience. I didn’t take the traditional path into this business — I found my way here by being myself. So I have a genuine question for those of you who actually know this industry: **From your experience, do you think someone with my background and an unconventional start in television has something worth building on?** I’m not looking for people to tell me what I want to hear. I’d genuinely value honest opinions — even if the answer isn’t what I’m hoping to hear.
We just had Lisa Schaffer (VA Director of Teen Titans, Kim Possible and more) direct selected students from our advanced group session today and she came with so much advice, I had to share 10 tips with you guys. 1. If you’re going to do a reading that’s completely different, do that in the second reading 2. Think about who is on the other side that will be listening to your audition 3. Lisa hates pauses, so take that as subjective advice 4. What you think is super fast is actually normal in animation 5. Only memorize your lines if you’re doing MOCAP. 6. Practice your lines enough to understand the character but not too much to sound like a robot. 7. Always read the room and act a certain way depending on the room if you want to get casted for other gigs by that director 8. There are people on the other side listening to your audition and they deeply understand the actor they’re looking for to voice that actor 9. Celebrities aren’t used as much in children shows as they used to be but still very much in adult shows 10. If you’re doing an excited character, start lower so you can go to a higher register when you’re really excited. What do you guys think of these?

I'm 23 now and I've recently decided that I want to be an actor. I'm taking classes and reading books and learning as much as I can. However, the industry in my country is pretty much non existent. So college would be my best option. But in order to get good enough to enter julliard or another institution, it would take me many more years of practice. Probably 3 or 4 years more. By then, I'll ready be 27. I feel like I'll be too old. Do you or anyone else you know go to drama school at an older age, especially at a very prestigious program? What was it like?
