“When we connect to people with our emotions we generally want two things: To be understood and/or to have the other person feel the same way that we feel. In order to have these things happen, first we must deeply feel the emotion and second, the emotion needs to be expressed in a strong and compelling way.This is exactly what has to happen in an audition. You need to walk into the room with a feeling of joy for being there and excitement that you get to share your work and yourself. If this is what is naturally being expressed, that is what the people in the room will connect to and they’ll have an immediate, positive response to you. This works both ways, as I’m sure you know. If you don’t feel connected to the material and don’t feel confident that your audition will be a strong and interesting representation of what you have to offer the role, you’ll connect with doubt and anxiety. When it’s time to work, and this goes for taped auditions as well, you need to reach out to the people watching and connect to them with the honestly felt emotions you’ve brought to the piece, expressed with power and heart. “Expressed” is a keyword here. Remember, film and TV auditioning and acting is not so much about creating something outside of you as it is about expressing what is already inside you. The people in the room want pure emotion, honestly expressed and in a taped audition the camera demands no less. Any showing, selling, or creating outside of the self puts a wall of effort in front of you and makes it impossible for you to make the true connections that make the auditioners feel what you want them to feel. But when your connection is eye to eye, face to face, and emotion to emotion, they know they’ve met the actor who can make the audience take notice and really feel. You know that social media offers excellent tools to market yourself, but are you using each platform properly?As an actor, you want to constantly strive to create an image of yourself as an interesting and relatable person. So often, though, through the misuse of social media, the blending of personal and professional comes through and it becomes difficult to showcase ourself in the appropriate light. This isn’t a rebuke on sharing parts of your life that are interesting and unrelated to acting; relating to your followers is an important part of being social. However, being consistent and molding your image is critical to gain a consistent and dedicated following.In the entertainment industry, image and perception are (almost) everything. You should strive to show your professionalism, talent, skill set, and appreciation for working daily to make yourself a better person and talent.Aspects of who you are and how you work to become better at your craft is very important to your social media profiles. Posting that you are at your workshop, getting new headshots, going to an audition, listening to a podcast about how to give an energetic performance every time, working on a new accent, etc., are all fantastic examples of what you could be telling your followers to boost your credibility.This also highlights that you are serious about your work as an actor.Focusing your time and energy is key to your online engagement. Don’t spread yourself too thin by using more than three social media accounts. You should be using social media to show followers and fans what you’re doing career-wise; it should not be the activity itself.Don’t spend more than 15-20 minutes per day on each platform and spend it crafting what you are saying rather than mindlessly roaming around wasting time.Spend time talking to and responding to your friends/fans to show that you hear them. One of the essential qualities of being a great actor is the ability to transform. Having an array of accents at your finger tip allows you to play a much wider range of people and increases the number of roles you can be cast in. If you’re a foreign actor and want to work in the American market, being able to act with an American accent will dramatically increase your opportunities as an actor. And even just reducing your accent will make you more castable, and prepare you to do other foreign accents more easily and convincingly. And learning how to do all this is fun and fascinating!The hardest part in learning an accent or reducing your accent is not learning the new sounds. It’s breaking the speech habits that you’ve had all your life, or that you’ve had for as long as you’ve been speaking English. We learn our first language as children, absorbing the sounds without any awareness of the process. But as adults the new sounds are competing for dominance with the old sounds. Luckily there is very cool science for breaking down and understanding the sounds, the mechanics of the sounds, the relationships between the sounds, and the nature and rules of stressing, rhythm and intonation, and a technique for rewiring your brain so you can speak these new sounds effortlessly while you are acting.Learn all you need to know to understanding and eliminating the American accent!Plus!
